5.0 out of 5 stars The Diabetes Inprovement Program
This book was a quick and easy but valuable read.

This was an interesting review of dietary factors that have a demonstrated effect on controlling your blood sugar.

I have had Type II Diabetes for over 20 years and it is largely controlled by diet, exercise and Resveratrol. The best and most effective I have found is at http://resveratrol10.com. It has not only lowered my blood sugar to 110 -120, but my...

This book was a quick and easy but valuable read.
It addresses diabetes in understandable terms, explains the glycemic index, discusses nutrition (diet), excersise, and the useful addition of nutritional supplements in the diabetic diet.
It notes a group of what the author defines as 'Super Foods' which can have profound positive bearing on the diabetic status, and includes a small selection of recipes.
The book also contains a very useful section that address 25 different sweeteners; basic and comparative information I have sought after for some time - all nicely compiled in one place.

I feel the information provided in this book on nutritional supplements, sweeteners and 'Super Foods' make it a valuable resource for anyone with diabetes or anyone responsible for providing meals for diabetics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great praise for this book, December 27, 2001

After hunting through many diabetic books for a gift for a friend of mine, I finally chose this one. My friend called me immediately and said it was the best gift she had ever received -she had read it backwards and forwards and had even highlighted it. She said it was extremely helpful (she is dealing with her diabetes naturally after experiencing prescription side effects) and is putting it's advice and recipes to use daily.

Most of the suggestions from the book seem reasonable to me as a means to improve blood sugar. The main problem with the book is that is dated and in need of an update. For example the book says that Splenda would be very hard to find which is hardly the case anymore and does not mention newer products such a PGX for blood sugar control. Otherwise most of the suggestions are probably valid. I would have given 5 stars but for the out of date issue.

I was surprised by the simple straight forward approach to the problems that must be addressed to live well with diabetes. This book contains clear sound approaches to nutrition, life style and overall health issues related to the diabetic condition.

This was an interesting review of dietary factors that have a demonstrated effect on controlling your blood sugar.

I have had Type II Diabetes for over 20 years and it is largely controlled by diet, exercise and Resveratrol. The best and most effective I have found is at http://resveratrol10.com. It has not only lowered my blood sugar to 110 -120, but my cholesterol is down to just 128 from over 150.

I live near the beach just south of San Francisco and walk my Giant Irish Wolfhounds 10+ miles a week for exercise. Resveratrol has also pumped up my energy level so I can walk farther in less time.

Overall, I would recommend this book as a good introduction of things you can do to take back control of your health,

4.0 out of 5 stars Good material, but really needs an update!, July 28, 2009
This review is from: The Diabetes Improvement Program (Paperback)
I purchased this book a few years ago, and it was very helpful. It was a little dated then, and is definitely due a revision. We have also purchased Quillen's book on Healing Cancer with Nutrition, which HAS been updated, and I guess he is concentrating on the cancer issues now, rather than diabetes. My own research shows there is what I believe to be a definite link between cancer and diabetes; I'd like to see this discussed further by Dr. Quillen. However, even as an older reference book, this is a must-read for diabetics, especially type II. The diet recommended by the ADA is so far off the mark, that any diabetic following it will surely struggle to keep their H1ac and blood sugar levels in the recommended range... just TOO many starchy carbs, leading to more medications, more complications, and more problems. This book addresses most of these issues well and in a way that is easy to understand.

3.0 out of 5 stars Decent Basic Primer, July 2, 2010
By
This review is from: The Diabetes Improvement Program (Paperback)
Some good info on vitamins and minerals ( chromium, magnesium, vanadium ) and necessary fats ( DHA, EPA GLA ) that are essential but outdated information particularly on some food choices. My understanding is that bagels are terrible for diabetics yet he recommends them. I have some doubts about other facts only because he states the average American eats 756 doughnuts annually !! That's more than 2 per day, every day for a year. I don't know that I've ever met anyone, including cops, who eat two doughnuts a day, every day. While I see good, solid info here, repeated in other journals about diabetic health, I am suspect of any info someone provides after seeing a statistic like that.

5.0 out of 5 stars no disappointments here, July 10, 2009

This book is a quick read and can be completed in one day if you really get into it. I found some new information I did not know previously, and found the explanations regarding "why supplement" to be enlightening. I feel this to be a worthwhile read for anyone with diabetes. I have started using the supplements, and I honestly feel
that they are helping -- my mood and general well-being have inproved considerably.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book might help you!, January 6, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Diabetes Improvement Program (Paperback)
This book is very easy to read. I started following the author's suggestions for taking certain vitamins and minerals, such as B, C, D, E, L-Carnitine, and COQ10. I also take metformin. There is also a section that explains possible side effects of certain vitamins. Niacin is one that has a caution added. I could not take it. When I added the vitamins he suggested it seemed like my craving for sweets declined tremendously. I chose to eat an apple every night instead of sugary snacks. I started eating Special K for breakfast instead of Lucky Charms, LOL. I lost 15 pounds! This is the 5th copy of this book I have purchased. I have been giving a copy to all my diabetic friends who are interested. At the price of $.01 for a used book, you just can't go wrong reading and trying some of the suggestions in this book.
It is written by a nutritionist and my health care provider liked that fact. I read another review that said it was outdated. Yes, written in 2001, some things have progressed such as the availability of Splenda and other sweeteners, but that doesn't mean that his common sense advice is outdated.
Hope you try it and your diabetes improves like mine did. (I have type II).
