Review

"A timely an comprehensive roadmap to improving blood glucose control and reducing diabetes complications through simple modifications of diet and lifestyle."
—Susan Carter, M.S., R.D., C.D.E., Stanford University Hospital

"An excellent book! Sherri Shafer draws on her extensive personal experience in nutritional management to make the dietary approach a very practical one. She doesn't emphasize the complete alteration of diet, but instead, how diet can be modified within the framework of an individual's personal preferences."
—Raghu Mirmira, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor, University of Virginia Diabetes Center

"This is a comprehensive and pertinent guide to successful diabetes management. It offers practical solutions to a complex problem. With obesity and its related health problems on the rise in the United States, this provides a valuable resource to help us all pay attention to the lifestyle and food choices we make everyday. I highly recommend it."
—Marlene Bedrich, R.N., C.D.E., program coordinator, Diabetes Teaching Center, University of California San Francisco Medical Center

"A comprehensive, easy-to-read resource to assist people with type 2 diabetes on how to incorporate nutrition therapy into their diabetes management. The book provides practical information on nutrition therapy that can be put to use right away. Nutrition therapy, an essential part of diabetes care, is often a piece on which people with diabetes receive little information. The invaluable information in this guide will help empower people with type 2 diabetes to engage in self-care of diabetes."
—Lisa Kroon, Pharm.D., C.D.E., assistant professor of pharmacy, University of California San Francisco, School of Pharmacy

"I am very impressed with this book. It is a comprehensive, thorough resource packed with practical information. It is informative and current, and while focused on nutrition, nicely links these principles to important questions regarding exercise and drug therapies, among other issues. The text is user-friendly and is written in a manner that is easy to understand. I would recommend it to all my patients with diabetes, type 2 or type 1."
—Stephen M. Rosenthal, M.D., professor of pediatrics, University of California San Francisco

5.0 out of 5 stars A great resource, March 7, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book. I highly recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, and also for anyone living with someone with diabetes. What is most refreshing about the book is that it is really a practical guide for healthy living. It clearly explains the interactions of food and exercise and alcohol and overall lifestyle, and how these components work together to affect blood sugar. It also answers questions related to diabetes in specific populations--kids, pregnant women, and older people. With so much information out there promoting fad diets and supplements, it is great to have a resource like this to debunk the myths and give the straight story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for quick perusal and management, January 10, 2006

This review is from: Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program (Paperback)
I met Sherri Shafer at UCSF, and this book is an extension of the great work that UCSF does for the diabetic community. It is light reading, but detailed enough to get you started if you've been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. The focus is on explaining how Diabetes affects your body, and gives you information about how nutrition and exercise are a huge factor in managing your blood sugar. There are helpful management tips, food information, and a "detailed enough" description of foods and the properties you're looking for to manage various aspects of your diet.

It is an excellent reference to keep on the shelf as well, in order to refresh your memory when you start to slide in your management regimen. Having a resource like this helps a lot, since having Diabetes sucks, and it takes a lot of knowledge and support to keep on track.

It is also a great book for friends and family of people with Type 2, to help them understand what you're going through and help you by supporting good health and good habits. Because it is a light read, you aren't asking too much to have them read it...

5.0 out of 5 stars An Awesome Reference!, December 27, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Diabetes Type 2: Complete Food Management Program (Paperback)
I would recommend this book to professionals as well as non-professionals living and/or working with diabetes. As a social worker working with families living with diabetes, I found this book extremely informational and it increased my knowledge and understanding of many aspects of diabetes in an easy-to-read and easy-to-follow format. I would recommend this book to anyone with diabetes or with a child with diabetes.
