Diablo: The Devil Steer [Hardcover]

William J. Buchanan (Author), Tony Hillerman (Foreword)

Available from these sellers.

Book Description

11 and up
David Baca, an Isleta Indian, lives with his family on a reservation in New Mexico. On Davids fifteenth birthday, his father is gored by Diablo, a wild bull that is terrorizing all the ranches and pueblos south of Albuquerque. David and his Anglo friend, Steven Callister, set out for revenge. William Buchanans young adult novel, first published in 1992 and now available only from UNM Press, is the tale of two boys becoming men who find friendship and courage across racial boundaries. Wild horses, cowboys and cowgirls, a schoolyard bully, and the wisdom of the elders make this story moving and unforgettable. It is also an authentic portrait of the multicultural twentieth-century West, where old ways coexist with new.

The ideal story to encourage reluctant young readers.American Library Association

Books which appeal to both mature readers and young adults are rare indeed. One thinks of Mark Twain and his Huckleberry Finn. Diablo is such a book.Tony Hillerman

Reading level: grades 6-10.
