Ultimate? Best there is!, June 2, 2011
This review is from: Diablo II Ultimate Strategy Guide (Paperback)
Brady Games's Ultimate Strategy Guide for Diablo 2 (and its expansion) does well enough. Some people complain that i's a bad guide, but that's not true--the fact is, Diablo 2 is an amazingly huge game with thousands of items, over a hundred skills, and several map variants for each area. Unless the book was nearly 500 pages long, there's no way Brady Games could fit in everything!
There is a brief introduction, followed by a chapter reviewing the characters. Specifically, the 30 skills that each of the 7 characters have. It gives a solid idea of what each skill does and what its pros and cons are, followed by tips of what some of the skills can be used for. The guide only once or twice tells what a character's skills should be, and instead motivates players to create their own combination and to try many character types.
After this, there are extremely brief views of the game's 5 acts and every quest in them. Sadly, there are no maps because each area has several randomly generated maps, leaving players to search the large lands for themselves. The quest overviews are short, telling the reader what to do, where the quest is found and completed at, how to get to the area the quest is in, what you'll be facing, and what you get in the end.
The largest part of the guide is the lists and appendix, where it shows every enemy grouping (skeletons for example, and each skeleton variant in a list below, with their individual effects, levels, and stats), every unique monster and their abilities and stats, and even the bosses. The appendix furthers this by showing every item's "prefix" and "suffix" words, which create thousands of combinations for items and what each word does to an item ( the "prefix" sword/axe/bow/etc. "of suffix.", each suffix and prefix have their own effects on an item). The guide shows every suffix word and what it means, and every prefix word and what it means. Then they have the spell charts, which shows every skill and its stats at every level (1-20), the magic jewels, gems, and runes that add special effects to an item, rune words (combinations of runes and their effects), and finally the combinations used in crafting. And there's even tips from pro Diablo 2 players who have proven themselves the best!
This guide is nearly 300 pages, and still doesn't encompass the world of Diablo 2 as it should. It's not a bad guide (especially in the battle chest), but it's not perfect.
