About the Author

BIOGRAPHY

Dr. Dorman had an eclectic up-bringing, before turning to medicine. It included service in the Israeli paratroopers in the 1956 Sinai campaign. He graduated from Edinburgh University, Scotland in medicine and then followed an diversified career in several branches of medicine. This was followed by a residency equivalent in internal medicine and cardiology which led to the Membership in the Royal College of Physicians of the United Kingdom. During a sojourn in Canada, he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Canada and became board certified in internal medicine in the United States.

Pursuing the problems of chest pain of non-cardiac origin he developed an interest in orthopaedic medicine in which his main contributions to medicine and science ensued. Dr. Dorman has practiced and studied the use of prolotherapy extensively and has contributed substantially to research in this area. Most ligament failure affects the low back and the neck. Studying this area led D! r. Dorman into developing a new understanding of the role of the human pelvis in locomotion in which ligaments play a sentinel role. Dr. Dorman is one physician who describes himself as a ligament doctor. Dr. Dorman has achieved recognition as an author a editor of several texts on these subjects and has produced a hard hitting medical newsletter in the last several years called Fact Fiction & Fraud in Modern Medicine which can be obtained via his web site. The web site also houses reproduction of many of his articles dealing with the philosophy of medicine and science, as well as articles on innovation in the musculo-skeletal system.

This short odyssey led Dr. Dorman to finding himself described by his peers as an alternative practitioner. This designation turned out to be prophetic. In the last ten years he has studied and incorporated several new and controversial methods into his practice. Some o! f these have included the use of Dark Filed Microscopy for the selection of patient specific remedies, based mostly on the research of a fascinating German zoologist, Gnther Enderlein. This line of interest has led to some amazing therapeutic outcomes. Dr. Dorman practices at the Tahoma Clinic in Kent WA.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unique and indispensable for physicians in many specialties, July 4, 2000
By
Jane Orient (Tucson, AZ USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Diagnosis and Injection Techniques in Orthopedic Medicine (Paperback)
"Oh, not another back!" is a frequent lament by physicians, whether a generalist or specialist. In medical school, physicians learn very little about conditions that might be classified as "mechanical diseases," except for fractures, dislocations, and other conditions treatable by immobilization or surgery. Most diagnosis is perfunctory and imprecise (such as "low back strain" or "sprained wrist"), and the treatment armamentarium is limited to non-steroidal anti-inflammatories, exercises that are unhelpful if not actually harmful, "muscle relaxants," or other anodyne intended to get the patient out of the office, preferably with a referral slip.

This book is indispensable to physicians who would actually like to help the 15% of their patients with an ailment in the neglected province of orthopedic medicine. It is based on meticulous work in the dissecting room, prolonged study with pioneers in the field, and extensive clinical experience and research.

The book begins with diagnostic and treatment principles and a discussion of morbid anatomy. I found it to be a remedial education, filling in great gaps in my basic knowledge and challenging widely held beliefs on the basis of compelling logic. Specific soft-tissue injuries are discussed by region: the neck, the back, the thoracic spine, the shoulder, the elbow, the wrist, the hand, the hip, the knee, the ankle, and the foot. There are lucid descriptions of basic physical examination techniques, most of which are omitted or poorly described in standard textbooks. (I relied upon it extensively for the second edition of Sapira's Art and Science of Bedside Diagnosis.) Excellent radiographs and line drawings complement the clear and well-organized explanations. There is a wealth of reference material.

Most physicians will need to read this book with an anatomy text close at hand, at least if they were trained after the great curricular upheavals. A good neurology book is also helpful.

Dorman calls orthopedic medicine the "Cinderella of medical specialties." Though the foundation for the specialty was laid in 1929 by James Cyriax at the St. Thomas Hospital in London, scores of clinical entities that respond to orthopedic medical procedures remain unrecognized and untreated. Neglect of these vexing ailments by "mainstream" physicians probably accounts for the great popularity of chiropractic as well as many lay practitioners who provide some form of manual medicine.

This book opened a whole new world of medicine to me. The discussions of referred pain and tenderness, the elucidation of the role of the sacrum and the sacro-iliac joint, the technique of examination by resisted movements (especially in the shoulder), and the explanation of the mechanism for the varied presentations of whiplash are more than worth the price of the book. Even those physicians who do not aspire to master the more difficult treatments for the neck or the back can learn how to benefit patients with common problems involving the shoulder and other peripheral joints and ligaments. At the very least, the book can help to save patients from the harm of misguided treatment or the misdiagnosis of malingering in those with genuine injury.

General practitioners, general internists, physiatrists, and orthopedists -- or anyone who treats "musculoskeletal" conditions -- should own this book. Patients who aren't being helped by today's standard treatment might want to take a look at it also. They might help to lead physicians to what I believe will (or should) become standard treatment in the future.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK, but..., May 4, 2002

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diagnosis and Injection Techniques in Orthopedic Medicine (Paperback)
The first thing I noticed when I opened the Amazon package was that the book looked as if it had been photocopied and bound at Kinko's, which is unusual given the price of it... This makes some of the radiographic figures hard to make out. Next thing you notice is that it's self-published (apparently after a publishing house discontinued it, the copyrights reverted to author). Given that, the content is not bad except for some lengthy discussions using such pretentious author-coined terms such as "tensegrity", and "assymlocation" (perhaps in a desperate attempt for posterity?). If you have to get one book on prolotherapy, you should get the one written by Hackett. It's more concise and written mainly by George S. Hackett (Hackett, George S., and Hemwall, Gustav A. and Montgomery, Gerald A., Ligament and Tendon Relaxation Treated By Prolotherapy, 5th Edition, 2nd printing, Oak Park, Illinois, 1993.), who discovered Prolotherapy, and who's treatment protocols remain the Gold standard for optimal results in the shortest amount of time.
Amazon sells the first half of this book (originally written 1958), I'm not exactly sure why they don't sell the the entire Hackett/Hemwall book from 1991. I got mine in a medical conference.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not for MD's, June 11, 2001

The title of the book is misleading. This is a book which may be useful to chiropractors but contains little information of actual medicine related to injection tecniques. It is more of a manipulative technique manual. Scarce not only of illustrations but also information. The radiology pictures are smudged and poorly printed. There are much better books in the market on the topic.
