Editorial Reviews

Review

"The editors have done a superb job... The contributors are all well-known experts in the field, and their chapters are well written and balanced. This is a helpful, practical, and comprehensive overview." --Michael F. Myers, M.D., Vancouver, B.C. American Journal of Psychiatry

"....Valuable....Balanced and comprehensive, this text will prove useful as a resource to researchers and clinicians in the field." --Terri Gullickson and Pamela Ramser, Contemporary Psychology

"This book constitutes a useful reference source for clinicians, researchers, and other interested mental health professionals." --Carlos Ochoa-Torres, MD, foundation Bon Sauveur, Readings

"The chapters you are about to read are uniformly well written, comprehensive, and balanced. They have been prepared by the leading researchers and clinicians in this field and encompass all that is known about chronic depression....I have learned a great deal from this book and feel sure that you will also find it extremely helpful in diagnosing and treating this commonly encountered, often difficult, but very rewarding group of patients." --From the Foreword by Allen J. Frances

"The contemporary revolution in psychiatry encompasses more reliable diagnoses, more effective treatments, and, above all, the establishment of scientifically-grounded data-based clinical practice, replacing an earlier era of tradition and folklore. These changes began with the so-called major psychoses, but have now begun to influence our approach to other conditions as well. Chronic depressive disorders and dysthmyia are among the most common problems seen in psychiatric practice, and their diagnoses and treatment are being radically transformed by these new strategies. Drs. Kocsis and Klein have assembled the leading workers in the field, and they offer us clear summaries of the current state of the art, what we have learned already, and what the next steps will entail. Our understanding of these conditions, our approach to treatment, and above all our ability to help are likely to redefine the profession, reshaping psychiatric practice for years to come. This volume provides a comprehensive survey of the current state of the field and an exciting glimpse of the future--how we will understand and treat the most common patients in psychiatric practice in the next century." --Robert Michels, M.D., The Stephen and Suzanne Weiss Dean, Professor of Psychiatry, Cornell University Medical College, Provost for Medical Affairs, Cornell University

"Drs. Kocsis and Klein's book provides a valuable service. For the clinician, it summarizes our knowledge about the assessment and treatment of chronic depression. For the researcher, it identifies gaps in our knowledge and points to needed research. A very complete and well-integrated book on this important topic." --Peter M. Lewinsohn, Ph.D., Oregon Research Institute

"Kocsis and Klein, in their research and now in this book, have put chronic depression on the map. Although the name chronic depression' has changed through different versions of the diagnostic systems, the public health impact has not. The editors have brought together some of the experts in the field and produced a balanced, state-of-the art volume." --Myrna M. Weissman, Ph.D., Department of Psychiatry, Division of Clinical-Genetic Epidemiology, College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University
