Physical therapists like myself have been waiting for a text from the author for over 10 years. Definitely a text for someone well versed in the anatomy and mechaincs of the musculoskeletal system. This text is written in clear categories and deals with problems in three general areas. It takes effort and analytic thinking to understand the myriad of motions listed in the text. A CD with actual demonstrations would help immensely in seeing all the factors the author is illustrating. The introduction covers very complex ideas made as simple as possible by the author. I would recommend this text for any movement specialist but I would caveat my recommendation with the warning that hard work is needed to really grasp the techniques listed in this text. This author is saying things that need to be learned by movement specialists and only can be applied by an expert.

The reason this book got 4 instead of 5 stars is because this is a very dense, text book quality tome that is written by one of the leading researchers, writers and teachers in the field of rehab and movement, Dr. Shirley Sahrmann.
It is not light or easily accessible information nor is it intended to be. It will require your utmost focus and concentration but that effort will be rewarded with more than a few "AH HAH" moments.
Again, I believe this is a book that should be a reference book in any serious, career minded fitness or performance coach and it goes without saying that the same applies to the physical therapy field.

I'm a rowing coach and was always looking for a book on the treatment of movement impaiments that would take an alternative look at the subjekt. With Shirley Sahrmann's book I have found everything I was hoping for. The author goes from the more general presentation of the necessary background informantion to the spezific diagnosis and possible treatments of the most common movement impairment syndroms. She also provides insights in an understanding these syndroms that is coming from a rather holistic perspective. Thus she is looking at movement problems as a result of problems of the whole chain of muscels involved in that movement, not just the specific muscels of the area, where the symptoms are noticed first. Any coach, who has discovered that improving athletes' performance in competition means advancing their physical performance by removing movement impairments, will quickly call this book one of his favourites.

While this book makes some contributions toward developing appropriate examination and treatment skills for addressing common spinal and extremity conditions, it has several serious drawbacks, especially when compared to the methods taught in other such texts. In this text, much attention is placed upon relatively minor elements of human posture and movement while other more important elements seem to be largely overlooked. Moreover, illustrations of corrective exercises are not placed alongside the textual descriptions of same but at the back of the book. These illustrations are rendered using a rudimentary digital human form rather than a living person, creating some confusion regarding proper exercise position and performance. Rather than go on about these potential flaws, my strong recommendation is that one carefully scrutinize this text BEFORE purchasing it. In my opinion, texts currently available from McGill, Liebenson, Cook, Janda, Kolar, Kendall and others provide better instruction and better methods of both clinical examination and correction of spinal and extremity dysfunctional conditions.

This book has taught me so much in a short time, improving my critical eye & corrective strategies aa personal trainer. If your physical therapist isn't trained this way, find one who is. I wish it were organized a bit more clearly, & included a glossary of terms (it assumes you know a lot to start). But if you have a brain in your skull & solid understanding of human movement, this is a must have.

Very useful for the practitioner involved in ortopaedic rehab, interested in going further than treating pain! Very essential complement to any good treatment. Will help you teach your patient how to take control of their body to prevent re-occurence.

Dr. Shirley Sahrmann is really a great physical therapist, teacher, clinician and researcher. Her concepts are based on understanding of biomechanics and motor control. This is the real deal. Understanding the movement system will help diagnose and treat your patients better. it is strongly recommended that you also attend her seminars to better integrate what you have learned into practice. Her treatment is more compatible with orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions as well as a therapist that is willing to spend time on his/her patients.

This is a great book. The way it is arranged and the information presented is all excellent. If you are interested in a book that will help you diagnose your clients movement problems this may be perfect for you. As a massage therapist however I was slightly put out that there were no manual treatment options discussed for each impairment. Exercise and postural correction are the treatment of choice in this book. A body worker should be able to add their own expertise to the exercises and life style changes and come up with a great combination of manual treatment with things the client can do on their own.
