Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry presents the latest information and most reliable guidance on immunohistological diagnoses in surgical pathology. David J. Dabbs, MD and other leading experts bring you state-of-the-art coverage on genomic and theranostic applications, molecular anatomic pathology, immunocytology, Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and more. Additional features such as tables discussing antibody specifications, differential diagnosis boxes, ancillary anatomic molecular diagnostics, and full-color histological images ensure user-friendly coverage that makes key information easy to find and apply. The fully searchable text is also available online at expertconsult.com, along with a downloadable image bank and access to Path Consult. This concise and complete resource is today's indispensable guide to the effective use of immunohistochemical diagnosis.

  • Discusses diagnostic pitfalls through immunohistologic differential diagnosis wherever appropriate so you can provide the most accurate diagnoses.
  • Presents chapters arranged by organ system for comprehensive coverage of all relevant information in a convenient and intuitive organization.
  • Provides quick reference graphs for antibodies throughout the text that illustrate the frequency of immunostaining for a variety of antibodies in tumors.
  • Includes Key Diagnostic Points boxes in every chapter for a quick summary of text areas that are of particular importance.
  • Features an expert author for each chapter to ensure coverage of the current state of the art.
  • Includes access to the full text online at expertconsult.com, along with a downloadable image bank and Path Consult.
  • Provides guidance on the role of genomics in identifying genetic and molecular aspects of disease that may affect patient care and therapeutic approaches.
  • Covers theranostic applications to enable you to evaluate therapeutic choices based on immunohistochemical results.
  • Reflects the latest developments in the field through new chapters on molecular anatomic pathology and immunocytology, as well as updated chapters on immunohistology of the prostate, bladder, testis, and kidney and Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.
  • Discusses antibody specifications with tables that convey information on uses, clones, vendors, sources, antibody titers, and types of antigen retrieval.
  • Presents key differential diagnoses boxes that provide tabular summaries of DDx and algorithms.
  • Features discussions of ancillary anatomic molecular diagnostics as an adjunct to immunohistochemistry for a more well-rounded diagnostic approach.

Accurately interpret immunohistochemical results and provide the clinician with the best therapeutic approaches for the patient

4.0 out of 5 stars excellent buy, April 21, 2010
This review is from: Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry: Theranostic and Genomic Applications, Expert Consult: Online and Print, 3e (Hardcover)
Never used or reviewed the first 2 editions, but I've seen other people using it often. When the 3rd edition was published, I bought it and found it very helpful in my daily work. The previous editions' reviewers complained about the index being poorly written. While I don't have a good comparison, I can say that the current edition has a good index, with most of the important biomarkers listed, and the specific organs related to it as a subcategory. As other reviewers have indicated, index is greatly important in this kind of reference book, since most people are not going to read the book from front to end.

I specifically enjoy the chapter on metastatic carcinoma of unknown primary, since this is probably the most crucial aspect of my use of biomarkers. The judicial use of tables and reference to genetic markers are very helpful too, esp. for board preparation.

The online edition is also excellent, but this is more of a general comment on Elsevier titles in general. I like the fact that I don't need to carry the book wherever I wish to read it. With a laptop, this book is available anywhere, which makes it very helpful. From now on, I would prefer most books that have an online edition.

A small shout-out to two contributing authors, Drs. Y and M Nikiforova. Great job and hello from NY! :)

5.0 out of 5 stars Recommended Reference Book, August 31, 2010

This review is from: Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry: Theranostic and Genomic Applications, Expert Consult: Online and Print, 3e (Hardcover)
I bought this book with book fund money left over from my residency program. The publisher is starting to offer online access to their recent publications. The server for [...] is, however, relatively slow but it is still a useful feature. For a resident, or a pathologist at an academic institution, a Pubmed search for specific IPs would be as useful as having this book on hand and perhaps faster to download. For a community pathologist, this would be a readily available and thus, useful reference (especially solo practice or small group practice). The new edition lists new IP markers becoming more common in large reference labs. Just as the prior edition, Dabbs offers good insight and guidelines on how to create IP panels. Overall, a great book but not a definite "must".

3.0 out of 5 stars Good reference but not what I expected, October 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diagnostic Immunohistochemistry: Theranostic and Genomic Applications, Expert Consult: Online and Print, 3e (Hardcover)
My main interest in the book was to get an understanding of both the immunohistochemistry technology and molecular diagnostics background and state of the art. It does a very good job in the first but it is a bit more high level with the second. It also does not offer a comparision between the different diganostic methods and which are research only tools versus approved by the FDA.
