Book Description

1555811167 978-1555811167 December 1996 3rd
This major reference work, now in its third edition, updates and advances the field of diagnostic medical parasitology and reports on the dramatic changes that have occurred in this area. Newly recognized parasites, alternative techniques defined by new regulatory requirements, implementation of testing based on molecular techniques, and new information on parasitic infections are just a few of the changes covered in this edition. As in previous editions, this book's approach is still to provide the user with clear, concise, well-organized procedures for use in the clinical laboratory. The text also provides a comprehensive discussion of two aspects of diagnostic medical parasitology - the individual parasites and the diagnostic methods designed to detect and identify the organisms present. These discussions cover information related to life cycle, morphology, clinical disease, diagnosis, treatment, epidemilogy and prevention.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great reference book, not necessarily good for undergraduate classroom use, February 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I had purchased this textbook for a Medical Parasitology course I took, and I initially had mixed feelings about the book. This review will be from an UNDERGRADUATE student perspective.

Pros:
+Lots of really good information (Life cycle, diagnostic criteria, treatment, etc.)
+Pictures and diagrams are helpful with identification
+Large appendix with everything from staining procedure to a list companies (contact info included) to purchase supplies from

Cons:
-Too much information for a single semester undergraduate course
-Can be a difficult read compared to Elizabeth Zeibig's Clinical Parasitology: A Practical Approach

Summary:
If you are an instructor teaching a single semester parasitology course for undergraduates, I would suggest you pass this book up on your required textbook list. That said, I would also tell your students that if they are pursuing a career in the field of Parasitology or plan on practicing medicine in developing nations that this textbook would be extremely valuable to their efforts in diagnosing and treating parasite infections as there are not only pictures and diagrams of the parasites, but also pictures of people who are infected and what the wounds look like.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lynne Shore Garcia, July 4, 2007
The new edition (the fifth) is better than the previously published. This book is usefull in a parasitology lab. The key points for laboratory diagnostic are usefull for driving lab tech and students. Infectious diseases provoked by rare parasite are not forgotten. the ratio weight of paper with a lot of draws and pictures /price is very good.
