It's been years since anyone put out a book of diagramless crosswords -- so this book would have been cause for celebration even if it were merely adequate. Happily, though, Brendan Emmett Quigley's book is much, much better than that. These are the most enjoyable diagramless crosswords I've ever solved; witty, snappy, and mercifully free of boring crossword fill. I hope we'll see a new volume soon!

Crosswords are one thing, but crosswords with no grid provided? That's the next level of tough. The cluing from these puzzles isn't that tough; if the grid were provided, they would be Tues/Wed/maybe Thurs NYT Puzzle level. But the fact that you have to start with a blank grid changes the game. Brendan does give you a hint, if you want it, giving the square to start to on and the type of symmetry of each puzzle. Without those starting points, I would have been truly lost. These are harder than I can really do (I have completed about 1/3 of them without pulling answers from the answer key), but I'd rather have a challenge than a simple fill-in-the-blank puzzle. Try it out!

A fantastic collection. Puzzles are challenging but fair, with each one containing a couple of headscratchers that can eventually be teased out. Themes add an enjoyable bonus to already satisfying puzzles. Too bad there aren't more collections like this!

This book contains background and several pieces of information on how to solve such puzzles. It also give clues to how to solve the puzzles. This is a big help to those who are novices to approaching diagramless puzzles.

Ordered this for my wife as she will buy a puzzle book just for the diagram-less puzzles. This is harder than the regular books, which was just what she needed. If you love diagram-less puzzles, this is what you need.

If you like to solve the occasional NY Times diagram-less puzzles, you will LOVE these. Typical BEQ (Brendan Emmett Quigley) masterpieces!
