Recipe makes 2 gallons of laundy soap: On a stove, heat 2 quarts hot water and grate 1 bar Fels Naptha into the water. Stir until naptha is dissolved. Slowly stir in 1 cup each washing soda and borax powder and remove from heat. Stir until mixture is the consistency of gravy. Pour this into a 2 gallon bucket. Add 1 1/2 gallons hot tap water and a splash of orange oil for fragrance. Stir mixture together and cover. Let it cool over night, and it should be the consistency of a thick gel. Either stir or use a stick blender to mix it to a uniform consistency. Use at a rate of 1/2 cup per medium wash load. You may also add a few ounces of cheap shampoo which adds cleaning power and fragrance.

A bar of this, some Borax and some Washing Soda and you are making laundry detergent at around 1.50$ per 5 gallons and the stuff works great! It is as good as big name brands of laundry detergent and I understand it can be used in those special washers.
You can Google the recipe on line.
I'd buy the Borax and some Washing Soda locally as it will be a lot cheaper but at a little over a dollar a bar on Amazon these can't be beat (I have seen them at 5+$ locally).
No more expensive grocery store detergent for me.

I have used this product to make my own laundry detergent.
I purchased it, washing soda, and borax by the case. The detergent works as well as my old big ticket detergent. I made enough to last ~ 1 yr for the price it would have cost me for ~ 4 mth of detergent, stain remover, ect. I use half the fabric softener and bleach now, as well.

I purchase this soap to use in my homemade laundry detergent. It works great with respect to getting clothes clean. It's also great for using as a stain stick. Really gets the dirt out. I cant say if I like/dislike the smell, it's your typical old school soap smell, I think I like the smell just because its a familiar smell. I bought a case to keep some in stock and it was a reasonable price if you include free super saver/prime shipping. I look forward to purchasing again which wont be soon because this stuff lasts along time!

We've always had a bar of Fels-Naptha soap in the laundry room sink, for scrubbing our hands after one of those tough outside or garage jobs that involves lots of dirt and/or oil. It's the only soap that can really clean our hands.

However, cat owners might also consider a bar of Fels-Naptha soap for the following tasks:

--For those cats who like to chew on electrical cords (especially the thin wires on Christmas trees), try rubbing the wires with a bar of Fels-Naptha Soap. Since I started this practice, our Christmas tree lights have stayed lit all season, instead of suddenly going dark a day or two after the tree is decorated.

--Rubbing a wet Fels-Naptha bar around the top of your plastic garbage bag where it sticks out from the garbage can, also keeps plastic-chewing cats from making holes in your garbage bag, and keeps the plastic from clogging up their digestive tracts.

--If you don't mind your stuffed furniture smelling like Fels-Naptha, it will also keep cats from clawing that expensive upholstery. Fels-Naptha is also much cheaper than the sprays that are sold to do the same job, and frankly I think the soap smells better than the sprays.

I make homemade laundry detergent with this.... awesome! It saves us tons of money. I just grind it up finely, add a cup of Borax and a cup of Washing Soda (not baking soda) to a big ziplock bag, mix it about, and voila! A heaping TB or 2 to a load of laundry!
