Jai Uttal's absorbing chant music gets a fresh burst of musical power thanks to Rara Avis and the Shaman's Dream ensemble. Dial M for Mantra is an album of re-interpretations of Jai Uttal's renowned kirtan singing. To start with, Avis and company re-imagined the beat structure for the songs on Dial M for Mantra, replacing tabla rhythms with electronic, ethno-techno beats. Next, the synth ambience was increased, with chillout elements and east-meets-west instrumentation suspended in deep atmosphere. Uttal's chanting is still a central focus, and is a surprisingly intrinsic fit for the electrified backdrop on Dial M for Mantra. The beats are in the mid-tempo range, and there's just enough of the original instrumentation present to maintain the Asian flavors of the original pieces. Dial M for Mantra is a great album for Uttal fans looking for something unique.- Dial M for Mantra is Jai Uttal's fresh burst of musical kirtan power. Jai Uttal is a true Kirtan master.

I'm a big Jai Uttal fan...he has done some fantastic music and several of his CDs are among my favorites. This one, however, doesn't do it for me. Maybe if I didn't know his other stuff I'd like it better. It's basically an exact repeat of a former album but he let someone get all funky with it and lay some funky techno vibe on top. The result to me is not good. I gave him 3 stars for this effort. My gut told me to maybe go 1 star, but my heart won out, since he IS Jai. And also since I know what's he's capable of. Come on, Jai, if you're reading this: bring out another ORIGINAL CD!

This CD is different than most music I would use for yoga class, but I love it! It's just the right amount of edginess to make it unique and totally different but yet it's still very appropriate for yoga practice or for just listening to. I find myself humming these songs throughout the day. If you don't like it at first, keep listening. It will grow on you. Although, I have to say I liked it from the start.

I have been a jai Uttal fan for years. This is a super new addtion to my collection. It is different than everything else and works perfect for my style of movement and yoga. These remixes are well done and I am happy that I took a chance on it.
