I've always been fascinated by industrial design, because so much of it is incompetent and unimaginative. So when something like "Dialog" comes along in the graphics subset of ID, it's immediately obvious how talented, imaginative and special Ken Carbone and Leslie Smolan in fact are. This book will inevitably become required reading in every good design school, and it'll be a fun read, too. Unlike so many "authorized corporate biographies," this one is superbly written. You'll at first be tempted to simply leaf through the book, it's so attractive, but the minute you start to read the text, you'll be hooked. Carbone and Smolan truly deserve their places on the pantheon alongside Milton Glaser, Saul Bass, Ivan Chermayeff, Tom Geismar and the other greats. (By the way, in this day of phony Amazon reviews that too often are everything from coerced to reimbursed, I feel it fair to say that yes, I know Leslie Smolan, but what I've written here is pretty much what I wrote to her, unasked, when I first read the book.)

Had a chance to read through the "Dialog" book... Great book, great read and great bargain!

It is wonderfully designed, well written, easy to read and shows great work.
There is also a nice visual pace in the book's design, the use of large clear type balanced with captions, images and color.

"Dialog" is light, yet visually bold, playful, lively and personal with a sense of humor.
Easy for readers to understand how both (Ken & Leslie) have complimented each other to create wonderful work and not let individual pursuits or egos complicate mutual interests... but to give clients great results.

I especially liked the interplay between each with quotes, comments and personal observations about each others roles in the partnership. To have achieved success and survived for over 35 years is amazing! Most marriages aren't that successful so "Hats" off to both...

I was lucky enough to work on a couple of projects with Carbone Smolan, though none that are featured in the book. I recognized the traits that have made Lesley and Ken such a success. Mostly their unwillingness to accept no. Whether it's talking Finland into shipping art to Washington or talking Putnam out of putting rocking grannies on their brochures, that fierceness is exactly what lifts a project from good to amazing.

L&K are fearless in describing their mistakes and missteps too, making "Dialog" must reading for anyone who wants to follow in their footsteps -- or just appreciates good design.

The work of Carbone Smolan featured in the book is a great example of well crafted quality design. Each project is refined to the point that it feels just natural and yet emanates elegance. Besides the work, the real story is the partnership of 35 years between Leslie Smolan and Ken Carbone. I like how that relationship is brought to light in an interesting and enjoyable way, and it adds a new twist to a design book. Well done!

Carbone Smolan's new book is quite simply an extraordinary and authentic portrait of a landmark partnership's vision, voice, creativity, individuality, business acumen, and wit. Beautifully written, wonderfully paced and designed, it is a great story that unravels with delight. Fame, Fortune, Fun, and Freedom, is the framework for a stellar body of work. A must have for anyone interested in the business of design, and the art of business.
