4.0 out of 5 stars The first word on dialogue, April 3, 2009
By
This review is from: Dialogue in Teaching: Theory and Practice (Advances in Contemporary Educational Thought Series) (Paperback)
Okay, not the first word, but Burbules does a really fine job of naming and distinguishing among the various speech forms "dialogue" can take (inquiry, debate, instruction, and conversation) and in a world where "dialogue" is bandied about with little attention to what is intended, this is a welcome contribution. But the greater piece involves his argument that in a postmodern world, where alterity is the name of the game, we can attempt to come to know and understand one another. His discussion of the development of the "dialogical relationship" is very helpful in that it helps us recognize that all the relational elements have to be in place before we begin to talk, but can develop over time allowing for deeper and more challenging conversations to ensue.
