~ Charlie Haden is perhaps the most versatile bass player in jazz history. As a band leader, as a sideman, and as a composer he has explored many aspects of music (not only jazz) with great success. For this CD the adventurous Haden teams up with Portuguese musician Carlos Paredes. Parades plays a 12-stringed, lute-shaped instrument referred to on the CD liner notes as a "Portugese guitar", but guitar fans will find the instrument to have a brighter tone quality than most guitars, almost like a hammer dulcimer. The music is mostly that of Paredes improvising on Iberian peninsula themes and musical styles with Haden improvising a suitable and sensitive bottom. For Charlie Haden jazz fans, there are occasional long bass solos to enjoy. For those listeners familiar with Charlie's Liberation Music Orchestra CD's you will feel right at home with this music. There is even Haden's "Song For Che". For those only familiar with Charlie through recording such as his Quartet West or his work as a sideman with some of the biggest stars in jazz, this CD will be a revelation. For fans of Carlos Paredes, this CD will be your introduction to a true jazz giant.
~ Highly recommended and worthy of repeated listenings. Every time you play this CD you will find something new to enjoy.

this is one of my favorite albums of all time; i picked it up years ago out of curiosity and because so much of what Charlie Haden does is so excellent, and just fell in love with the simplicity, freedom and beauty of it

when he first heard Carlos Paredes, Haden says he was reminded of Ornette Coleman (via whom i came to know Haden's work); this music is much more sonorous than Coleman's, and i recommend it often to friends as a gentle introduction to the kind of jazz i like

Actually, I wake up to this CD every morning. This work represents a seamless blend of Portugese classical guitar and the jazz styles of Charlie Haden. A fair amount of free improv, but also more than enough "tempo-ed" music to keep things focused and interesting. Paredes guitar work is extremely alive on this album; a lot of energy in each track. Not an utter masterpiece, but very different, if that is what you are looking for.

I was looking for this CD for some years. Fortunately, a friend of mine suggested to look after this CD on Amazon. And when I did, it was instantaneous! Thanks, Amazon! And believe me, it was worthwhile, because I purchased in euros and therefore it was a true bargain!
