Product Description

Norton Gemini Type 01 Large Diameter Free Cut wheels are used for larger cross-sections, like solid bar stock and angle iron, and on hard-to-cut materials like nickel and titanium alloys. The side reinforcement reduces breakage and helps provide straight cuts. Large diameter cutoff wheels use durable, versatile aluminum oxide and are intended for use with stationary saws. Run the cut-off machine at the highest possible speed marked on the wheel.

Reinforced cutoff wheels are designed to resist breakage caused by severe cross-bending and are required on any operation where the work is not securely clamped. Resin bonds are organic bonds that soften under the heat of grinding, releasing dulled abrasive grains. Because of its forgiving nature, only an organic type bond is used in cutoff wheels. The resin-bonded wheel is more resilient than a vitrified wheel. The manufacturing term for a resin bond wheel is "cured," meaning the wheel has been heated to less than 500 degrees F. Straight (also called flat) wheels are the most common grinding wheel shape. Flat wheels are used for grinding on the periphery, or outside boundary edge, of the wheel and produce a slightly concave surface, called hollow ground, on the workpiece. These wheels can be used for cutting off, tool grinding (between centers or centerless), and removing mold marks and sand from castings, among others. They are frequently used with grinding machines. Using a harder grade wheel increases wheel life but also increases burn and requires more power, and decreases cut rate. Burn is the effect on a workpiece from thermal stress as abrasive cuts or rubs material away. The damage ranges from discoloration to cracking of the workpiece.

Aluminum oxide is a widely used and versatile abrasive material. It is a tough, fracture- and wear-resistant grit that works well with a broad range of materials, from metals to wood. Aluminum oxide is more durable than silicon carbide and often used for material removal and finishing.

Abrasives are used for a variety of applications from shaping a part to fine finishing, depending on the grit size. Low grit numbers like 40 are coarse and are used for removing excess material and shaping a part. High grit numbers like 400 are fine and help to create a smooth surface finish.

Norton Abrasives manufactures a wide variety of sanding, grinding, and polishing abrasives, and has been located in the United States since 1885. In 1990, Saint-Gobain purchased Norton, keeping its manufacturing facilities and offices in the same location. Norton/Saint-Gobain has been recognized as a Global 100 Sustainable Company, as well as earning ISO 9000 and 14001 certification for quality and environmental management standards.

5.0 out of 5 stars Smokes any DeWalt cutoff wheel March 25, 2013
Size Name:10 inches|Verified Purchase
it's a ten inch abrasive wheel so you know I'm putting it on a miter saw it has no business being on. I've never heard of a ten inch chop saw for metal. That said, it's running slower than it's rated for, about 3900 RPM rather than 6100 or whatever it's rated for. It cuts metal better than every other ten inch abrasive wheel I've used so far, and Norton has a customer for life.

5.0 out of 5 stars love it kinda December 16, 2013
Size Name:10 inches|Verified Purchase
the description on this said for metal but didnt specify ferrous or non ferrous metals so i figured it would cut both . technically it does but is for steel and ferrous metals it slices like a hot knife through butter. loud as hell but nice clean burr free cut, on aluminum it more pulls the aluminum apart rather than cut it. i put it on a 10 inch carpentry chop saw, which is wasnt designed for but works. again sweet for steels and iron not for others

5.0 out of 5 stars The one time I didn't mind being cut off October 21, 2013
Size Name:12 inches|Verified Purchase
Attached this to a Dewalt chop saw to take care of some stainless-steel bar step-rail tubing I purchased from Kegworks. Went through it like butter and left a relatively clean edge that was easily taken care of with a file.

1.0 out of 5 stars Misleading Ad March 2, 2011
Size Name:10 inches|Verified Purchase
Again MSC can't get their act together with posting ads on Amazon. There is only one wheel in this purchase not the pack of ten as stated. I brought this to MSC's attention weeks ago but the ad still implies there is ten! Be very careful when buying from MSC on the Amazon site. Two out of two purchases from MSC have been incorrectly presented.
