This review is from: Diamond Cuts: Triple Play (Audio CD)
I love the Diamond Cuts series of obscure baseball-related tunes. Of the first 3 in the series, this one is the best. I like that most of the songs are not just generically about the game, but specific towards a particular player or team. You get homages to the '57 Milwaukee Braves, the Big Red Machine, Nolan Ryan, Yogi Berra, Harmon Killebrew, and more.
My favorite is "Letters in the Dirt", a tribute to Richie Allen, as the songwriter looks back on his innocent childhood ("me & you, we never booed Richie Allen"). A close 2nd is "Remember Me", which chronicles the tale of Ken Keltner, a 7-time all-star but one most remembered as the fielder who ended Joe DiMaggio's hitting streak. I love the haunting refrain, an admixture of pride and lament, of "I nailed him." The Diamond Cuts team nailed this one. |
