Book Description

February 7, 2012
The follow-up to the critically acclaimed novel Platinum, Diamond Life returns to the smoke and mirrors world of fame with brand new characters and more true to life plotlines.

Alex Maxwell’s career as a journalist and celebrity ghostwriter is taking off, but it pales in comparison to her rapper husband Birdie’s multi-platinum debut and world tour. Slowly but surely, everything they swore would never happen begins to happen—leaving Brooklyn for a mansion in suburban New Jersey and letting a reality TV crew into their home. Birdie is confronted time and again by the sexy groupies who pursue famous rappers, and he’s forced to make some life-changing choices.

Meanwhile, the largely unknown performers Trip and Step release their new single, and it becomes the hottest song of the year. The duo’s popularity spreads like wildfire at the expense of entertainment’s leading icons—Jake and Z—who seem to be losing their edge, their market share, and perhaps their reputations, too.

Diamond Life doesn’t just pick up where Platinum left off—it reintroduces Platinum’s main characters from a different perspective and gives background characters center stage while presenting future stars. Whether readers have read the first book or not, they’ll be swept up by this intoxicating story of love, sex, ambition, money, betrayal, and the surprising realities of making it big.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“In this atmospheric follow-up to 2010’s Platinum, entertainment journalist King continues the saga of her hip-hop moguls (and the women who love them) that she started in Platinum… the author’s journalism experience with Vibe, Essence, and other publications lends an authentic air. Readers will enjoy guessing which real-life celebrity dramas might match their fictional counterparts. A solid page-turner.” --Publishers Weekly

"This sequel to Platinum features more behind-the-scenes drama . . . in the hip-hop world." --Library Journal

5.0 out of 5 stars Can you have it all? February 7, 2012
Format:Paperback
Readers who enjoy guessing games and insights into the Hollywood lifestyle will find the characters and situations in this book entertaining. The storylines of the six to eight characters were expertly threaded together to create one exciting read.

Alex and Birdie are getting use to the fame that writing and rapping brings but also the money that comes along with it. Before all of the fame they were comfortable living in Brooklyn and they both said no to leaving Brooklyn and doing a reality show. (but situations and money can change a family). Once Birdie's song becomes a hit his face is noticeable by all, but especially the female groupies. So far Birdie has done a good job of keeping the groupies at bay, but as you know the more you say no to people, the harder they fight for what they want. Touring for weeks at a time away from Alex is making "no" a hard task.

Jake, rapper and record producer is trying to find his way after the death of his wife Kipenzi.(in Platnium LIfe) He functions with a plastic water bottle but the contents of the bottle definitely is not water. His depressed persona and alcohol induced mind makes it easy for him to make the terrible decisions he's making regarding woman and sex. Then he meets Lily and something changes, but can it change him or is it too late?

Ras and Josephine are struggling to hold on to a marriage that has met its share of challenges. Cleo's book Platinum almost destroyed his life and a challenge concerning Reina is about to explode in his face. Will Josephine forgive her husband this time or will we be singing R. Kelly's song "When a Woman's Fed Up."

Beth has taken care of Z through his addiction and groupie days, but now Z is clean and sober and Beth feels she lost her place in his life. Zander their oldest son is in love with Bunny but not so much her fiery temper.

All the couples in Diamond Life have life challenging decisions to make while living in the public eye. The Diamond life is definitely a lifestyle for those at the top of their game or on their way there. The scenes in Diamond Life will make you smile and then laugh out loud making it difficult to put the book down until all pages are read. Secrets and unforgettable sagas will have readers up all night turning pages.
