The Diamond MSP100R Mini Rockers Mobile Speakers are capsule speakers that fit together magnetically. If you twist the top of each speaker it will expand, thus increasing bass. The speakers connect to one another via a retractable cord that's hidden in the base of one of the speakers. On the other speaker there is another retractable cord that will plug into your music player. A third cable that comes with the set is used for charging the speakers when their battery is low (as indicated via a blue/red light on one of the speakers). This cord plugs into a USB port on one end and one of the speakers on the other end. (You can still play music while charging the speakers.)

If this sounds confusing, it sort of is. There are at least two cords to deal with every time you want to hook the speakers up, and a third cable that you're responsible for not losing. In theory, having retractable cables fitting snugly into the base of the speakers seems like a good idea. However: (1) It increases the height of the speakers; (2) the cords may be perfectly strong, but they seem worryingly insubstantial, as if a good tug might break them; and (3) I worry that with repeated use the plastic pull things that cover the cables when they're retracted will break.

I'd like to contrast these speakers with another pair to which I have access, the IHOME Rechargeable Mini Speakers for iPods (Black), which are very similar in design:

-- The most significant difference for me between the iHome and the Diamond speakers has to do with the cords. As described above, the Diamond speakers require three cords to do their job, two of which are retractable.

These speakers are very cool for what they are and they've clearly put a lot of though into this. Just don't expect booming sound cuz it isn't scientifically possible. Deep, rich sound needs large coned speakers and solid casings to help reverberate. But don't get me wrong, these have decent sound for the class they're in so I'll review them on that level.

What I like most about the Mini Rockers is the design. The whole unit is a bit bigger around than an empty toilet paper roll and a little shorter. The first thing I noticed is the feel of the Rockers. It's kind of velvety to the touch which gives it an elegant feel. I think it's a subtle rubber coating or something, not sure. Whatever it is, I like it. It makes the unit feel nice in the hand and the shape and size is perfect too.

The Rockers are held together magnetically and split apart in the middle to separate into 2 stereo speakers. This in itself is very cool. Most portable speakers meant for travel are mono and I expected these to be the same. So it was a nice surprise to split them apart into proper stereo separated speakers. That right there beats all pocket size portable speakers I've tried.

The speakers connect to each other via a built in mini USB cable. Mini USB connectors are supposedly becoming standard for cell phone chargers and it looks like they'll have other applications as well. The USB connector is retractable and neatly tucks away into the speaker body. The same is true for the stereo jack that plugs into your laptop, ipod or whatever.

Both the retractable USB and stereo plugs are neatly hidden away into the speaker body and have an attached end cap that hides the fact that they're even there.

These speakers are good quality for their size. They are also very easy to use, just hook up to your music player and connect the speakers. The retractable power cord and speaker cord saves the hassle of having to untangle wires, although it is a little hard pulling the cord out. The cords are about 1.5 feet each. The power cord is slightly longer. There are two speakers held together by magnets forming a pill shape. The finish is that soft plastomer (rubberized plastic). For charging just hook up the main speaker to you computer. The usb charging cable is included. That is one of the most convenient features, its all in one, no batteries to run out. The ends of the speakers unscrew and come out about half an inch and improve the sound by enlarging the driver enclosure. There is a volume control that can make the speakers much louder. These speakers are very good for traveling due to their size and it comes with a traveling bag so you can keep the usb cable and speakers together. Compared to my pair of Koss screw on the ear headphones, these speakers project the sound around the room while the headphones are on your ears and sometimes make the sound seem like it is coming from within your head. Yes like I said before, good quality for their size, but by being so small there is only so much quality you can pack in. So they are a bit tinny sounding, but better than the cheaper un amplified speakers.

This product has nothing but rave reviews from the "experts". Who are the "experts"? My teen Granddaughter and a number of her friends. They are lining up to buy one because its sound is so great. At least 7 people are planning to buy one for themselves after seeing this one and listening to its sound quality.
UPDATE: I had to add another to the list of those who want one of these. My Daughter told me she wanted me to get her one for her Birthday so I did. She was happy as can be with it, but was upset that my Granddaughter swiped hers (she wanted a Black one) and gave her my Red test unit instead. What do you expect from kids?
I can't think of a higher praise for a product than to buy another one, which I did.
UPDATE 2: Now my other Daughter asked me to get her one for Christmas and her son (my Grandson) also wants one for Christmas. I am sure when my other Grandson sees it, he will want one also. So that means I have to buy at least 3 more and maybe 4 since I obviously won't be getting my test unit back either. Wish that Amazon had a volume discount since 5 of these speaker systems will set me back about $162, not counting the one I got from the VINE program. Lucky that Amazon did reduce the price of these units by $6, from $38.35 to its current price of $32.35. Hopefully it will be reduced further in the next 5 weeks before I have to order Christmas presents...

I have previously reviewed a much larger sound system for MP3 players, which needs to be plugged into an electrical outlet and this little device that is smaller than a soda can is four times as loud as that speaker set is despite it having THREE speakers, one being a huge bass speaker. And the Diamond's sound is FAR clearer and and much more crisp than the other unit.
