5.0 out of 5 stars Great card great price!
First, let me point out that so far the only 1 star review for this card is from someone who COULDN'T GET ONE! That says more about this card than the 5 star reviews does! I love this card. It is very quiet, not like the last card I had (a BFG Nvidia 6800GT). It is, however, huge, both in length and width. I built a new computer in my old Alienware Predator case, and I...

1.0 out of 5 stars ATI not ready to play with the big boys yet.
Despite staggeringly powerful specs the 5870 it is worthless. I can't run my pc on hopes and dreams. While nvidia is flooding the market with 285's and i can buy a ton of 295's, the best card both spec wise and price wise is nowhere to be seen. It seems the only thing amd and ati can sell is hype!!!

I built a new computer in my old Alienware Predator case, and I had to cut out 3 of the 6 3.5" drive bays to allow for the length of the card, and for the width of the second card I will be adding eventually (Crossfire, yeah!). I'm playing Bioshock 2 with everything set to the max, and I actually had to turn the card settings DOWN from Turbo to High Performance (the gameplay in High Performance is more fluid, no pun intended).

Get this card. Just be prepared to mod your case to make it fit.

Update: After 3 months of light use this card just died. First, my computer was just idling, and as walked by the screen went blank then displayed "no input". I turned off the power and restarted, and just as it got to the desktop the screen went blank and then "no input" again. This time I noticed the fan on the card was racing, but it wasn't even warm to the touch. I turned off the power again.

I let the computer sit for about an hour, then booted it. Same thing.

I emailed AMD, Diamond, and Amazon describing the issue. AMD replied "not our problem, you have to deal with Diamond". Diamond never replied. Amazon replied within a few hours, with a refund authorization and prepaid return shipping label (they were our of stock on the video cards, or would have sent a replacement).

So I'm going to try the EVGA GeForce GTX480 Superclocked 1536 MB DDR5 PCI-Express 2.0 Graphics Card 015-P3-1482-AR. Look for that review in a few weeks.

I still liked this card while it worked, but I was very disappointed in both AMD and Diamond's customer service. Amazon's customer service was, as usual, superb!

One final update. I did finally hear from Diamond, 15 days after I submitted my request for support. By that time I had returned the card to Amazon, and received and installed the GTX480.

5.0 out of 5 stars Runs fast, runs cool, no issues!, November 12, 2009

Excellent video card, especially if you want to run games at high resolutions and graphic settings. I used to use a GTX280 and it put out a lot of heat. This runs quite cool in comparison. They did a lot of work on throttling back the chip when it doesn't need the power and it shows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Single GPU Video Card, Faster than my old 4870X2!, January 30, 2010

This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
I was running a Tri-Fire combination with a Dual GPU 4870X2 & a Single GPU 4870. This Combination gave me a 3Dmark06 score of 23416 using an Intel 3.0 Quad Core and 8 gigs of DDR3 Memory. It also gave me over 50 FPS in Crysis with all settings maxxed out. The old 4800 series is a 55nm process and sometimes runs a little hot during full load and intense graphics.

This new 5870 is the best I have seen so far. It is built on the new 40nm process and runs 20c cooler. Alone it gives me a 3DMark06 score of 22890. And is able to push Crysis at over 60 FPS with all settings maxxed out, that is impressive. I run all my games at 1920x1200 and 2XAA or 4XAA. All this with just a single GPU. Can't wait to see this in crossfire.

So far this card has worked great. I had read about all the nightmares with installing it, but it went smooth and easy. Once installed Win7 recognized it and I installed the drivers from the CD. Then went to ATI web page and downloaded the newest ones. Every thing runs smooth and my Windows experience rating went to 7.8 for graphics. It is a very large card and I also had to install a new psu [...] which was larger than the one I had before. The biggest problem I had was getting my large hands inside my tower. Ill update as time goes on. I would have included a pic but I dont see where you can do that on here.

UPDATE: Its been 6 mts since I installed the card. Still works great with no problems. Games are all super smooth.

5.0 out of 5 stars great card if you can find one, November 23, 2009
This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
i was lucky..after searching for 2 weeks I located an open box at at a fry's in San Diego ..They said the card was tested on return ..I hate buying open box items. So I really don't know why the card was returned ...OK ..the card is 10.5 inches long so it runs past the length of the mobo..so i moded my p 182 antec to fit my previous card was a evga 9800 gtx+ my power supply is an 850 watt antec so i was ok the card uses 2 8 pin molex connectors..just to be on the safe side I reformated my c drive to rid my registry of any nvidia files ..i recommend a reformat if your previous card was nvidia ..the card ran smooth as silk after reformatting ..before it would flicker playing movie files using dvx...my processer is amd 9950 4 gigs ram..so i was running cod4 modern war 2 at full res with aa at 4x ..the card would heat up from 37 c to about 60 playing games running temp at rest is 37 c..with a 20 percent increase in speed over the 9800 it is worth the upgrade...next I'll upgrade my processor to a 965 or 955 amd to get more boost one thing that sold me was direct x 11 capabilities

cons ...5870...where art thou

5.0 out of 5 stars The Joys of DirectX 11, March 29, 2010
This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
Recently upgraded to the 5870 from an 8800GT. This is my first ATI card as I was previously convinced that Nvidia were the kings. Oh how times have changed. The benchmarks for this card pretty much blow away anything Nvidia has (not to mention the added benefit of low heat and low power consumption). I was lucky enough to find one at a Microcenter for $399, so I snatched it up. The GTX 470 and 480 might give it some competition, but for price point, load temp, and power requirements, the 5870 is still the way to go.

The card is insanely huge, over 11 inches long. It fit in my Antec 900 case, but only after I moved the HDD out of the way and did some creative cable management. Installing the latest drivers took a little while, but I was up and running relatively quickly. During load the card operates near silent. Don't know what my temps are though.

I fired up Metro 2033 and enabled DirectX 11. All the settings were maxed out at 1920x1200. The game looked flawless and ran buttery smooth. I had to have been getting anywhere from 45 to 60 fps. I'll check that to be sure, but the card didn't even break a sweat.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for use on 30" screens, December 12, 2009
This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
Seems i was lucky enough to find one of these at my local shop.

Upgraded from an 8800GT and this card is great. It is fast.. (usually over 100 fps in 2500x1600 with wow latest patch) and it does not make a lot of noise.
Very happy for now and i highly recommend that.
Had bad experience with sapphire 4850x2 and xfx 5770 so if you do want a video card and need a lot of power, this one is a great choice.
Not cheap but worth it i think.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome card, March 12, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
Simply put, it is just amazing.

Of course there are better VCs out there, but the difference between an HD4870 to this one is big and the performance is all everything I was looking for.

Although I was expecting fro the card to have a better finish (physically) like shown on the headline picture or whatever, it came out to be a refurbished or something like that look. Just a very simple red plastic cover on top not like shown here. Felt kinda ripped off because only had the manual, the DVI and one crossfire bridge wrapped in bubble wrap with some tape, very much like a used card would look. But the card is great.

Great product for an affordable price.

5.0 out of 5 stars 2 cards running 6 LCD's they work great in Alienware, February 14, 2011
This review is from: Diamond ATI Radeon HD5870 PCIE 1024 MB GDDR5 Video Card 5870PE51G (Personal Computers)
These two cards are working 6 LCD's, Eyefinity and also
with a i7 930 ,over clocked 2.80 to 3.20 and
using 2 Display port (ACTIVE) adapters sold separately
each $107.00 and separate usb power supply I added ,card
specs says you don't need it but ,I wanted it
so for 4 months no problems with cards they work great .
I don't use them for gaming just for a lot of real estate you know
room to see better watching 2 movies and TV show
and checking emails at one time it just makes things get done faster
also the cross fire is hooked up but using the 6 monitors instead
just 1 really fast card when they are
connected with the connector bridge
if you need 3 to 6 to 9 or more monitors this card will work just get
the active display adapter $107 ea
