Much like the Middle Brother album there is an excellent song on this album that stands out from the others, that song being Christmas In A Chinese Restaurant (the standout track from the Middle Brother album being Daydreaming). McCauley is at his best when things get quieter and introspective.....and when you can tell that he has spent a while crafting a song. What makes War Elephant such a landmark album is the craftmanship of the songs; that album contains some of the best songs written in the last 25 years.....no joke. So saying that I have subsequently followed all of McCauley's work and been a huge fan. This is a great album, the only compliant being the songs that were busted out and written quickly aren't as strong.......I would like to see the greatest songwriter of our generation get back to really fleshing out a song, taking a while to write it, and getting back to that folky country vibe.

I'm writing this because there's only one other review, and this album deserves not to be overlooked. I like it because it's just plain fun. I listen to 2012 in a long playlist set for shuffle. Often I've had the experience of thinking "wow, that's good, who is it?" - and often, it's Diamond Rugs. Not perfect, but exactly how I like my rock and roll.
