5.0 out of 5 stars Great option for a small child's first bike
I bought this bike for my son's 3-year birthday. He loves it. While the box did not include instructions, the bike was NOT difficult to put together. Unless you are completely clueless mechanically, that should not be a problem. It includes a small wrench for easy assembly.

1.0 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY IT HERE
The bike comes with NO installation instructions, completely disassembled. My dad and I spent over an hour trying to put the pieces together and came up with something that wasn't workable. I took it to a local bike shop so I could pay for assembly. GUEST WHAT! They had an identical bike for about the same price!

This is a nice, high quality bike - but DO...

I bought this bike for my son's 3-year birthday. He loves it. While the box did not include instructions, the bike was NOT difficult to put together. Unless you are completely clueless mechanically, that should not be a problem. It includes a small wrench for easy assembly.

I chose this bike for a number of reasons:

PRICE: I didn't want to spend $190 for the Specialized HotRock

BRAKES: The brakes are the standard coaster brakes (push down/back on the pedals to stop) needed for a small child who is learning to ride (I felt a handbrake would have been a problem at this age)

QUALITY/NAME: DiamondBack quality is pretty good and the bike is lighter than the crap you find at a WalMart-type discount store.

Overall, this will last him a few years and is a good bike for learning how to ride. The Specialized is better quality of you're willing to spend an extra $75 (they only sell through local dealers). Mine was not missing hardware and the stickers were applied just fine. Don't hesitate! Great deal.

4.0 out of 5 stars Missing hardware make a good bike a bad chore, August 17, 2010

Diamondback are nicely made bikes. Rode one for a week in the desert and it was terrific. HOWEVER, three missing pieces of hardware, combined with a miserable instruction book for assembling, and some supplementary photos on a sheet of paper, photos that were not visually meaningful for the purpose, gave me two hours of heartburn and improvisation. If I had been able to buy this bike assembled locally I would have.

5.0 out of 5 stars LOVE this bike!, July 27, 2010

Just purchased this bike for son who recently turned 3. He has been on a Strider for the last 10 months and has practically mastered it. This bike is perfect... it's a little tall and a little heavy, but it doesn't seem to bother him. My husband put it together in 30 minutes, and it took another 5-10 minutes to adjust everything to my son. Totally worth the money, and great quality. !

This is a nice, high quality bike - but DO NOT buy it online. It is not intended to be purchased by a consumer - but is sold by the manufacturer for bike shops! It requires special assembly tools and good technical knowledge of bicycles. There is no customer support from DiamondBack - it is not a consumer-direct business! You'll be stuck with a construction set and will be paying $30-$50 to a bike shop in the end.

2.0 out of 5 stars Pedals are incorrectly threaded, September 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diamondback RM Boys Bike (Sports)
The pedals on this bike are incorrectly threaded - the right pedal only bolts onto the left side, and vice versa. As a result, it's going to be difficult for my daughter to ride the bike, and I'm going to seek replacement parts.

I bought two of these bikes, so I know the pedals for my daughter's bike are defective. Her bike kit was also missing the set of Allen wrenches.

As with my son's bike, the instructions were difficult to follow, and the stickers were sloppily applied to the bike frame and accessories.

My son likes his new bike although I would have preferred some actual instructions because the actual owners manual does not have assembly advice. Fortunately, I got it together and we've been enjoying it since!

3.0 out of 5 stars So hard to assemble, August 26, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diamondback RM Boys Bike (Sports)
The bike seems to be very good quality, and is adorable to look at, but it came with useless pictures of bikes that don't look at all like this bike, no tools (even though it says there should be tools in there), missing hardware....putting it together was a nightmare and mostly guesswork. Had to take half of it apart again and start over. Save yourself the hassle and have a bike shop assemble it, or buy an assembled one. I can't even get the training wheels on - the simplest thing, and the screws don't seem to fit, the bolts seem stripped, the fender won't tighten up in the back and is just flapping around.

5.0 out of 5 stars A big hit!, June 6, 2011
This review is from: Diamondback RM Boys Bike (Sports)
We got this bike for my son's 6th birthday (he would definitely give it 5 stars!), and if he didn't have to go to school today he would still be riding it! The size is perfect for him and he's very comfortable on the bike (16 inch version) and I actually ended up getting this bike mainly due to the orange color, since it his favorite of the moment. I'd say it took my husband about an hour or so to get it together. He also mentioned that there was some friction coming from the rear hub, but it hasn't seemed to slow down my son at all, and it seems like something that will loosen over time. Really pleased with the quality and look of this bike. Would recommend the 16-inch for 5-6 year olds.

Bought this for my son's sixth birthday and it has worked out well. Took a bit to put together, but it really wasn't all that hard. It doesn't require any special tools.

Two negatives:
1. There is a fair amount of friction from the rear hub when pedaling. It seems to be loosening up a bit, but I have a feeling there's a problem with the way the brake comes from the company. It's not horrible though.

2. The rear fender sticks up pretty high and makes it hard for little boys to get their leg over the seat. I'd advise bending the fender down a bit.

All in all it's a nice bike, my son enjoys it...and thus far there hasn't been a single problem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great bike, May 21, 2010

This was a great bike. It took some time to assemble and it turned out to be to small for our son, but Amazon made the return easy! The one thing I would say is that it is hard to fit a kid to a bike online! Also, unless you are handy with things, the assembly may not be your cup of tea. My husband is handy and it took him a couple of hours to put it together. It was a cute bike though.
