Product Description

When a little girl gets too big for a 20" wheeled bike the Tess 24 is the way to go. The heavy duty steel frame will hold up to the trials of childhood while the 40mm suspension fork will make heading down the dirt paths much more fun. Add in both front and rear twist shifters and she will have lots of gears to experiment with. The linear pull front and rear brakes will make stopping easy. Put your little one on a Tess 24 and watch in amazement as she grows - both on and off the bike.

I got this bike for my 9 year old daughter on her birthday. This was really important to us: she's right between the 20" inch and 24" sizes and a lot of the 24" bikes we tried out were a bit too big for her, the 20" ones seemed like she'd only get to ride for the summer before she out gre them. This bike fit perfectly, seat lowered all the way down and she'll be able to grow with it and use it for a long time. This is her first mountain bike, we were looking for quality and value, and I believe this bike has both. The components are all shimano, the seat is very comfortable (according to her) and the bike is sturdy. It's a bit heavy but it's standard for steel frames in this price range. Plus, she won't be doing any jumping just yet. We've been on a few rides already and the bike has managed well. The shifters do their job well. As on ALL new bikes, the cables will loosen in the first couple of months so the derailers will require a bit of tuning, this is normal and should not be cause of concern as I've read in some reviews. Also, I've read reviews on other sites criticizing the fork but the truth is that on a kids bike, this fork is pretty sturdy and has enough resistance and travel. Unless your kid is competing and requires a more specialized bike, this is a great introductory bike. I bought this at sports authority, so they assembled it for me (store policy) but if you buy here, assembly is really a breeze. Basically you have to put the wheels on, the pedals on, turn the handle bar and thighten the brakes. The hardest part is taking all the cardboard out!
We did a lot of research, tried tons of bikes and I think really found great value in this one. Not that it matters a ton but the bike looks great too, definately way better put together than those cheap ones at walmart (and I shop at walmart). Definately would recommend to others.

I bought this bike for my 10 yr. daughter, I did not buy it from Amazon, but form REI, I am very handy with bikes, but they put it together for free, for $180 total, it is a steal.
This bike is not light because it has steel frame...standard in this price range. 21 speed Shimano grip shfters and derailler. We rode it now for a year now, seasonal use, no problem at all....For an average handy man, you can put it together within an hour...and please use a bike stand or bike rack when trying to put it together, it is about 40lbs I believe, or put the handelbar first, then put the bike upside down to install the rest of the components..

My daughter hasn't been able to ride the bike yet due to the massive amounts of ice on the streets this year, but the bike definitely looks nice, was easy to put together and will be a great size for years. The low bar height makes it so my 9 year old can use it now and, since it's made for a teen, she should be able to ride it for a long time. I'm a little worried that the front shock is el cheepo and won't work very well, but can't say for sure yet. The price is incredible.

UPDATE!!!... very disappointed that diamondback would sell this bike. The shock is useless, the bike weighs more than mine and my wife's together and the grip shifts are impossible to turn. I kept telling my daughter to toughen up with the shifters until I finally listened to her and tried them. I couldn't even turn them. So I replaced the rear shifter and now it turns like butter. Diamondback should be embarrassed to sell this...

I bought this bike for my daughters 11th birthday and she really likes it. I comes disassembled, but it is very easy to put together. I put it together in about 15 minutes and it rides perfectly. She has been riding it for about a year now and it has been superb. I don't know why its getting such low ratings. It is easy to put together if you know what your doing. No parts have broke, nor has any parts just fallen off. Just remember to tighten up all the nuts and bolts. This is a nice bike and I would recommended it to anyone wanting a nice quality bike for their daughter.

We have 9 (yes, NINE) bicycles in our stable. 3 of which are tandems (from beach cruisers to a touring Santana). 5 of the bikes are ridden at least once a week, 2-3 of those almost daily. Do all my own work on bicycles...even one currently that's a total restoration.

So....this isn't a bad bike, if you know a little about bike maintenance (which means you can possibly tune up brakes/shifters and fix a flat). Assembled it completely without instructions in about 45 minutes (some of that time was carefully unpacking). Ours did come with an assembly guide and a bike manual (in the same box with the reflectors, pedals). No tools included. A cursory look through the assembly guide...yep...didn't miss anything.

Right out of the box issues....frame was slightly scratched from shipping. Packaging from the manufacturer issue....Not Amazon's fault...they just slap a shipping sticker on the big box. A little bummed, but not a deal breaker (it's going to get scratched anyway). Second...though...the reviews on the grip shifters are pretty right on. Very hard to shift. Already purchased the Shimano Acera 'trigger' shifters, and after installing/tuning those, this bike should be good to go for many years. I may put some city slicks and better brake pads on it in a month or so...just cause those are two really inexpensive upgrades for a great increase in safety/performance.

Overall....not bad for the price, but the grip shifters need to be replaced, so consider that in your choice. If you aren't 'bike handy', then you may also have to pay someone to assemble. If that's the case, you may be better off with a local bike store purchase (more $$$ though).
