Bought this for my daughter. This bike retails for $280 at our local bicycle shop. You get it so much cheaper here because there is some assembly required. Don't worry. It's not so bad. The chain and the rear gears and rear tire come assembled, and seem to be adjusted properly. The fork is already inserted as well. What you will have to install yourself are the handlebars, the front tire, the seat, the reflectors, and you will have to properly adjust the brakes (this is probably the hardest part) and install the brake cables to the brake handle on the handlebar, oh, and cut the excess wire once you are done. I can see why the bike shop charges an extra $80. Probably $40 of that is labor, the rest, well, they have to stay in business. But building it is definitely not impossible. You don't really need any special tools. Just the basics. Allen wrench, a socket wrench set is handy to install the front wheel. Wire cutters to trim the excess wire to the brakes. It comes with the caps so the loose wire ends doesn't scratch anyone.

I'm disappointed that the wheels are not quick-release. Although the seat is quick release. The bike is not as light as my son's Specialized Hotrock 20. But it is not heavy by any means. It is still pretty light. Light enough for my daughter to handle it well. Much lighter than the Diamondback Tess 20. The front shock compresses easily, perfect for my daughter's weight. And the wheels are true. Don't have to get a spoke wrench. But you should get one anyway.

So far I'm happy enough with this bike that I ordered a 2nd one for my other daughter. This bike is very much worth the extra $50 or so more than the Diamondback Tess. And this bike is a much better bang-for-your-buck than a Specialized Hardrock 20. I think I paid $350 for the Specialized.

My son just turned 6 and and outgrew his Lighting McQueen bike. He is average weight and height and could ride his older brother's 20" single speed. Unfortunately, we have some hilly terrain and he had difficulty going up the hills. We started to look for a 20" bike with gears. Looked at all the larger Toys... and many mart stores. Basically there were not many choices. The $100 range bikes were too heavy for him to handle (over 35 lbs.)because they tended to be full suspension bikes with gears. The lighter 20" bikes with gears at the local bike shops were around $300 with or without a front suspension.

The DB Octane on Amazon was just right and in the middle price range. Our built bike weight is almost 25 lbs. with an optional kick stand and bell. Installation was fun with my son's help and took just a little over an hour. The required tools came with the bike. The only tricky part was the front brake adjustment. Just took some patience trying out different adjustments and finally got it. The wheels were somewhat true so maybe that's why it was fairly easy. I can see if the wheels were not true and if one was not mechanically oriented, it would be difficult. Some may want to take it to a local bike shop for installation and/or adjustments. In general this is probably the best bang for the buck for a 20" wheel bike with gears.

Pros:
Lightweight for a bike with gears and front shocks
Smaller geometry and many adjustments to accommodate smaller kids
Good quality Shimano components
Brakes function well and easily
Gear shifting is easy for a 6 year old to twist

Cons:
If wheels get bent during shipping, taking it to the bike shop would negate any savings.

The bike went together easy - the only frustrating part, the rear brake was installed incorrectly at the factory. But once I figured that out all was good. I wish the bike came with a kickstand, but for another $10.00 we had it together. My girlfriends 7 year old boy shifts the bike with ease and got used to the hand brakes very quickly. Good quality for the price - very happy with the purchase.

I put this together for my daughter for the holidays, of course putting it off until too late and facing some serious crunch time to get it all done in one night. Everything worked great, except the seat post was too large in diameter, so I have had to find an alternative. The quality of the parts is high, and it is easy to put together in an hour or so. You'll want to know a good bit about bikes to make sure the hand brakes are reliable after you put it together. Your kids safety will depend on it.
