Product Description

What is a Recoil? The dictionary defines recoil as "to spring or come back; react." The Diamondback Recoil takes that definition to heart. Whether it is flying down the wide open trail or making its way through twisty tight single track, the Recoil 29 will react to what is under its tires and then spring back and be ready to take on what comes next. What’s next?: 29ers. The larger diameter wheel is taking over, and with good reason. The Recoil 29 is the perfect beginner bike for those just getting into aggressive riding or those who are looking for an entry level full suspension rig. It was built with a solid platform in mind and is fully upgradeable should you so choose to step up your component package to the next level. Larger wheels are not the only goodies on this beast, We've added a SR XCT 100mm travel fork w/external preload adj. The Shimano SL-M310 Rapidfire 8-speed shifters control an Altus front and an Acera rear derailleur and the HG31 8spd Cassette (11-32t) combined with the SR Suntour XCC T202 crankset ( 24/34/42t) give you 24 mountain crushing gears to choose from. The Tektro Novela mechanical disc brakes with 6" rotors will provide all of the breaking power that you’ll need and the Weinmann SL-7 Doublewall wheelset will provide a tough and stable platform for your bike to roll on. Diamondbacks signature alloy AL6061 Ahead stem and SL318b oversized Mid Rise handlebar create the perfect cock pit while the SL309p Alloy Micro Adjust 30.9mm post and WTB VOLT Sport SE saddle ensure that you can pedal all day long. The 2013 Recoil 29 comes in a stealthy black/red and is available in sizes: SM (16"), MD (18"), LG (20")

I was just going to replace some parts on my 40 yr old Schwinn when I started shopping for a full suspension bike. I didn't want to pay 1000's and this looked like it had a lot of great features. The 29 concept grabbed my attention and I did a lot of research before purchase. I am 59 and relatively fit, but figured I would ride a suspended bike more often. I have beat this thing for a month now like I am a 12 year old. I gave it a 5 because I can't really complain about anything. It is strong and geared low enough to do some serious uphill. I weigh a touch over 200lb and I have not bottomed out the suspension yet. I do as much off road as possible and our area is filled with miles of available trails. I replaced the seat with a much cheaper padded Schwinn from Walmart. Comfort is key here. The rear suspension has a lockout not mentioned, that was nice for hard pack climbing, but I rarely use it. I have probably put 400 miles on this thing with over half of it in the dirt. If I had to do one thing to improve my decision, I would have gone ahead and purchased the PRO version to get the extra gearing, hydraulic brakes and stepped up suspension. That doesn't mean I am displeased with this in any way. I just learned how great things can get and now know they can get even better. I will probably have this bike until I die and if I don't quit acting like a 12 year old that could come quicker that we hope. I would recommend this bike to anyone that wants to do some serious off roading and doesn't want to spend ridiculous money. I found assembly and adjustments to be straight forward. I have no idea what it weighs, but I can curl it and press it up to hang on the garage ceiling just fine. I am pedalling up hills that my friends are pushing while they lecture me on the extra weight of suspended bikes.

I live in Charleston, SC which is a fairly big bike town. I looked at the local shops to try and find a good mountain bike to start with. I had been learning on a cheap off the shelf mountain bike from Dick's. Its did the job but after a year of riding and learning I knew I wanted to step up to a 29er with better components.

I looked at the local bike shops that sold bikes like Giant, Specialized, Trek, etc but the cost of these bikes was very high. While they are quality products no doubt I could not get past the price tag of them. I had been so impressed with my off the shelf cheap DB that I bought from Dick's I decided to stick with the DB brand.

Originally I was going to pick up the DB Overdrive which is a very solid starter 29er with is price tag of $440.99 but then I found the DB Recoil 29er at $525.00. This is the on sale price down from $750. But the choice was really a no brainer at this point.

I had it shipped 2 day Prime and it actually got to me the next day! The bike was about 1/2 assembled and I was easily able to finish the build. The front and rear derailleurs were factory set, and they did shift but it was not very good. I took it to a local bike shop to dial them in and review my build. The cost of this adjustment and inspection was around $20.

I took the bike out for the first time yesterday and I can say its a dramatic change from my hardtail 26er DB. The bike rolls over obstacles like a tractor! Have 24 gears up from my old bike with 21 made way more of an impact than I thought. When I go to the extremes you can really feel the mechanical mussel of this bike come to life.

The rear shock has a lock out which is a very nice feature and is very easy to twist to adjust preload on the spring.

I am new to MTB, and this bike truly helps me practice, exercise, and develop the skills. With the right adjustments (and yes, you do need to take it to a shop for a professional adjustment if you don't really know how to do it yourself), it provides for smooth shifting, great breaking, and overall enjoyable ride, whether on the road or off-road. The only item that would require an upgrade is the crank set, so get ready to spend another $100 - $150 on a decent crank set to enjoy the 100% potential of the bike!

For the money, this is a wonderful bike! Handles very nice, is comfortable (although I had to change the seat before I could ride it as I'm a woman not in perfect shape yet:). I have found that I have the full suspension in locked position most of the time. With it turned on, I find I waste too much energy going up and down as opposed to forward. The only time I use it is when I am going downhill with lots of ruts. The full suspension adds significant weight, so if you just want a really good mountain bike that is lightweight, you may want to look around a bit more. If you plan to kamikaze down mountains, then this is an excellent bike for the $$ :)

I've owned this for a few months now and put well over 100 miles on it on our single track and technical trails. It does require some TLC from the local bike shop every once in a while, but if you can repair and tune bikes, you're good.

I've taken this thing off of 3' huck drops, dirt ramps, wooden launch ramps, root beds and rock beds and I gotta say, 29" of tire is amazing. I'll never go back to a 26" for trail riding. The LBS repair guys said "this shouldn't be taken off road and definitely not off drops". Claimed the frame wasn't built well enough. Then he tried to sell me a $2500 cannondale.

THE GOOD: For $500 (what I paid at the time) I got a bike that that not only handles root and rockbeds like its smooth pavement, it handles drops and landing jumps smooth as silk. The bike weighed much less than my Wally Mart special. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. There is a lockout feature for the rear suspension to switch to road surface riding.

THE BAD: It's no Cannondale or Trek, but I've never rode those so I don't know what I'm missing; but I can tell you, it beats the snot out of my busted Wally Mart special. The chainring isnt the strongest in the world, but holds up to grinding over downed tree trunk obstacles. I have bent a tooth on my outer ring, but I just bent it back with a pair of pliers. The under frame shift cable for the rear gear cassette is exposed to the elements (no tubing) so once it gets mud caked on, shifting drags a bit. Wet brake pads = squuuueeeeeeeeek! (hit em with brakleen or rubbing alcohol). Crank/pedals bow after powering through a climb. I've noticed when I pedal now, my pedals feel wonky.

ALL THINGS CONSIDERED: I'm 5'8" and 197 lbs.
