Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Davies here updates his 1991 Diana: A Princess and Her Troubled Marriage by recreating her life since her separation from Prince Charles in 1992. In stilted language, Davies strives for objectivity in this unauthorized account, but his reliance on anonymous sources makes much of his material speculative. Diana is described as filled with anger at Charles, at Camilla Parker Bowles (his reputed lover), at Tiggy (the woman Charles hired to watch his children) and particularly at the Royal family. Although she has overcome her eating disorders, according to the author, she is lonely for her children, who are at boarding school, emotionally insecure and dependent on various therapies. Davies also discusses Diana's love affairs, her interview with the BBC and her continued commitment to charity work. Not much here. Photos not seen by PW.

From Library Journal

For the seemingly insatiable audience for stories about the Royal family, here is a book aimed at readers who think the tabloids don't dig deep enough. Numerous "friends" of the prince and princess of Wales were apparently eager to share all they knew with the author, who is able to tell us not only what the princess did but what motivated her and what she was thinking at the time. Chapter headings like "The Christmas That Made Diana Cry," "A Prince's Betrayal," "They Made Me Feel Like a Leper," and "Diana's Perilous Gamble" contribute to the feeling that one is reading something in a supermarket checkout line. The prescient Davies (Queen Elizabeth II, Carol Pub. Group, 1994) ends by telling the reader not only what the princess will demand in a divorce settlement but what the queen will demand in return, as well as what the queen hopes to accomplish with her insistence that Charles and Diana divorce. If you have Andrew Morton's books, this is not a necessary purchase, but it will probably prove a popular one. Buy as demand dictates.?Elizabeth Mary Mellett, Brookline P.L., Mass.
