--An old story, but worth reading--, January 2, 2006
This review is from: Diana: There Was a Fair Maid (Audio Cassette)
DIANA, THERE WAS A FAIR MAID takes place in the 1920's and 1930's in a small village in England and is the story of Emerald Diana Gaylord-Sutton and John Lee. They first meet when she is eleven and he is twelve. Their backgrounds are quite different. She is the daughter of a wealthy businessman and the largest landowner in the area. John is an orphan and the descendent of local farmers. He lives with the relatives who take him in after the death of his mother. There is an instant attraction between the young couple when they meet in a beautiful forest that they call Synackery.
As the years pass, they fall in love, and Diana encourages John, who she likes to call Jan, to better himself, get rid of his accent and become a writer. Sometimes, a year or two passes when they don't see each other because her family live mostly in London and often travel abroad. Diana is never out of John`s thoughts. His life and future are tied to her and he becomes very accomplished in order to win her love, The story seems rather simple, but the author's prose and storytelling talents kept me interested. My husband and I listened to the taped version that was will done and most enjoyable.
Books written in other times of our history give wonderful descriptive passages with the exact flavor of the time in which they are written. For instance, the dialog, the moral customs of the time period and even the expectations of a good life are reflected within the pages of these forgotten stories. Reading the books written from other eras also provide a lot of history. Unfortunately many of the older books are overlooked today.
R. F. Delderfield. also wrote TO SERVE THEM ALL MY DAYS and CHARLIE COME HOME which are both wonderful stories.
