Book Description

Nestle Nutrition Workshop Series: Pediatric Program May 1997
The aim of this volume is to continue to increase the understanding of epidemiology and nutritional rehabilitation of diarrhoeal disease. A major paediatric problem worldwide, diarrhoeal disease causes immense suffering and millions of deaths each year. Children with gastrointestinal infection are particularly affected nutritionally due to closer interactions between nutrition and infection. Based on a workshop held in Pakistan, this text presents the discussion and insight of experts from ten counties and five continents. Coverage includes: epidemiology; transmission; aetiology and pathogenesis of diarrhoeal disease, as well as its nutritional dimensions, management, complications and preventions, and recent developments in vaccination against infectious diarrhoea. Special focus is placed on: persistent diarrhoea and gastrointestinal infections in children with AIDS; and inflammatory bowel disease and the other causes of prolonged diarrhoea. The text also covers the host-defense mechanisms, preventive aspects, and the role of the immunological and other factors in breast milk that prevent diarrhoea in infants.
