Let me say this. Randall Barnes did an excellent job on his debut novel. He tackled subjects that high schoolers go through and also put a modern day spin on things. The main character makes you want to root for her and her goals. This is one book that everyone from 14 to 80 should read. Definitely recommended by Books, Beauty and Stuff.

Aaliyah Anderson is a 14-year-old eighth grader trying to navigate the sometimes fierce urban setting where she lives, while maintaining her focus on what’s important. She has seen so many people fall prey to what lurks in the streets, including those in her own home, that she vows to have no parts of it. Aaliyah is sassy, cute, and intelligent – a combination that drives the boys crazy. Although she lives in a setting of drugs and gangs, her life is not that of the typical urban youth. Her parents, though divorced, are hard working individuals who are doing extraordinary things. Their example for greatness has been present her whole life, even though they failed miserably at relationships. The only question is whether she’ll be able to make it to adulthood without the pitfalls of urban living claiming her as another statistic.

Randall has done a remarkable job with his debut novel. Typically, I don’t read Young Adult fiction, but was glad to get a copy of this book. His drive and determination to be better than what we see in the media, to do more than the average youth, and to strive for more than wearing fancy labels and living life in the fast lane, are so apparent. For various reasons, I’d like to see his book in the hands of other young people, if for no other reason than to show that their generation has a voice and they don’t have to get caught up in street life in order to be a ‘boss.’ It is my hope that the passion Randall has for writing and for empowering others continues to grow and that he makes such an impact on his generation that others will want to emulate him and leave behind the negative that’s so often sought out. Great job, young man!

Very impressed with this young author, Randall Barnes, and his writing. I don't typically read YA but I often pick up things for my 15 year old to read. I got this one for him and I ended up reading it before he could get to it, and I'm glad I did. It's nice to read books about smart young black women who are facing challenges but not succumbing to the usual pressures of the world. Thanks for doing something different, Randall!

Randall Barnes is a fresh new voice on the horizon in urban YA fiction. He is unique and brings lots of flavor to the game. His style is smooth and deliberate. He is a master of words. As a young man, he can only get better with age just like fine wine as he matures and explores the craft of writing. His parents should be proud. I am a fan for life. Aaliyah Anderson's story can help young brown boys and girls around the word.
