Book Description

May 1, 2005

Diary of Andrés Fava is all reflection: on his reading, his dreams, conversations and writing. This unpredictable journal is peppered with quotes from French poets and American jazzmen. Bemused and melancholy, erudite and searching, this irreverent gem is full of autobiographical winks at the reader and hints at themes and techniques Cortázar would continue to explore.

Julio Cortázar is one of the true giants of twentieth-century Latin American literature. Innovative, irreverent, playful and haunting, Cortázar’s writing pushes at the boundaries of expression and makes accomplices of his readers.

Anne McLean’s translation of Javier Cercas’ Soldiers of Salamis won the 2004 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Premio Valle Inclán.

Review

"A whirlwind voyage through Cortazar's mind." -- The New York Times Book Review, June 5, 2005

About the Author

Julio Cortázar was one of the true giants of twentieth century Latin American literature. Hopscotch, his multi-directional novel of exile, philosophy, love, and death, was hugely influential in the 1960s. Some of his short stories, from collections such as All Fires the Fire and Blow-Up, figure among the very best of the genre. Innovative, hilarious, and haunting, Cortázar's writing pushes the boundaries of expression. Anne McLean currently lives in England where she has translated the work of Carmen Martín Gaite, Orlando González Esteva, and Ignacio Padilla. Her translation of Javier Cercas' Soldiers of Salamis won the 2004 Independent Foreign Fiction Prize and the Premio Valle Inclán.
