Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Of particular interest to new parents will be this imagined "diary" in which Stern ( The First Relationship ), father of five and psychiatry professor at Cornell University Medical Center, traces the development of baby Joey from infancy to about four years of age. In prose that characterizes Joey's responses to his world (for instance, the use of "I" is reserved until Joey is four and a half months), Stern illuminates the development of volition, memory and a sense of self as they take place in five overlapping "worlds of experience." The brief diary entries are expanded in descriptive sections in which Stern interprets an infant's reaction to sensory and emotional experiences; in these direct, informative accounts the baby is referred to as "she." An inventive and highly accessible approach to an endlessly absorbing subject. 25,000 first printing; $25,000 ad/promo .

From Library Journal

This is the imaginary diary of a child from the age of six weeks to four years, based on the experience and research of Stern, a professor of psychology and psychiatry. The reader is drawn from the "world of experience" to the "world of stories" through poetry and prosaic imagery describing simple events in the child's life, both in the child's voice and in explanatory text. While perhaps most suitable as a creative gift to new parents, this possibly may be a useful addition to the psychology collection in academic and larger public libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars lucid presentation of latest infant development theories, November 23, 1996
By A Customer
This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
Daniel Stern is a world expert on infant development and psychiatry, as well as an iconoclastic and creative theorist. This book is a lucid and poetic presentation of his theories, accessible to the layman and full of treasures for the professional. It is the form of a set of small vignettes from significant stages in the devellopment of a little boy, Joey. The poetry is necessary because much of the concepts refer to pre-verbal stages of development, and it works very well. This book is a good companion read to _The interpersonal world of the infant_ which presents the ideas from a technical point of view, with the supporting scientific evidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mind, December 17, 2002

This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
Dr. Stern's prose is beautiful. He presents, in near poetry-format, a fascinating look into the mind of an infant. Starting at 4 weeks and continuing to 4 years, he brings you into the world of a child. I couldn't put this book down! (And this is notable, given that I am a new Mom and have more than enough to do!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift for new parents, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
As a pediatrician, I love this little book and have given it to all my friends when they had their first baby. Dr. Stern is a recognized expert on early childhood development and teaches at Cornell. In this book he has done something quite unusual. He succeeded in weaving the pearls from his academic work into a delightful, readable book that any interested person can enjoy. This book makes it fun to understand your child better.
