2.0 out of 5 stars a little too verbal for a baby
This author pretends that he is speaking as the baby and its ridiculous. He is a baby with a HUGE extensive vocabulary and is also very poetic. At times these baby narrations just become too silly to even take this book seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars lucid presentation of latest infant development theories, November 23, 1996

This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
Daniel Stern is a world expert on infant development and psychiatry, as well as an iconoclastic and creative theorist. This book is a lucid and poetic presentation of his theories, accessible to the layman and full of treasures for the professional. It is the form of a set of small vignettes from significant stages in the devellopment of a little boy, Joey. The poetry is necessary because much of the concepts refer to pre-verbal stages of development, and it works very well. This book is a good companion read to _The interpersonal world of the infant_ which presents the ideas from a technical point of view, with the supporting scientific evidence.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Mind, December 17, 2002

This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
Dr. Stern's prose is beautiful. He presents, in near poetry-format, a fascinating look into the mind of an infant. Starting at 4 weeks and continuing to 4 years, he brings you into the world of a child. I couldn't put this book down! (And this is notable, given that I am a new Mom and have more than enough to do!)

5.0 out of 5 stars A great gift for new parents, March 8, 2006
This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
As a pediatrician, I love this little book and have given it to all my friends when they had their first baby. Dr. Stern is a recognized expert on early childhood development and teaches at Cornell. In this book he has done something quite unusual. He succeeded in weaving the pearls from his academic work into a delightful, readable book that any interested person can enjoy. This book makes it fun to understand your child better.

5.0 out of 5 stars every new parent should read this, August 31, 2005

This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
This is an amazing book. It tells the story of what life is like from birth to age 4 from the point of view of the child. I give it as a gift to every new parent I know because I believe that the most important quality in a parent is empathy -- the capacity to understand the inner experience of their child. It is written by a highly respected researcher on child development and is also useful for graduate students in psychology to get a handle on difficult concepts in a pleasurable way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Adorable Synopsis of Baby's Developmental Leaps, June 19, 2011
This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
"Diary of a Baby" provides an adorable synopsis of significant developmental leaps that a baby goes through from six weeks until four years of age. Writing from an infant's point of view, Stern takes the reader through a journey of what a baby sees, feels, and experiences. The book is concise at 165 pages, and both easy and fun to read. Stern studied medicine at Harvard University and for more than thirty years worked in research and private practice focusing to the observation of infants. He is also the father of five children, and his personal experiences directly influenced this book. A noted author, professor, researcher, and therapist, Stern weaves together facts derived from infant research, the undeniable importance of emotional bonding as evidenced in the clinic setting, and a creative writing style. The result is a book that gives a quick yet layered understanding of baby at six weeks, four and a half months, twelve months, twenty months, and four years. I teach babies to master their motor skills and found this reading essential, and now I rate this as a "must read" on my parenting blog!

I give the book to every new parent or parents to be. It gives them a very easy to read and understandable view, from the baby's perspective, of what's going on developmentally during the first couple years of birth. An excellent read for all parents!!!

This review is from: Diary Of A Baby: What Your Child Sees, Feels, And Experiences (Paperback)
This book is based on most serious psychological research and reflects the knowledge we at the moment have about how babies percieve and experiences their environment. A book I recommend for all becoming parents, and it ought to be read before the child is borne. It explains how, and why the relational environment is of paramount importance for the psychological developement of all children. Do you want your child to have a psychologically sound developement? Then read this book!
