It has been over half a century since I read Anne Frank's diary, but it had such an impact on my life that I have never forgotten it. Today I am buying a copy for my great-granddaughters, just as I did for their mother & grandmother when they were of appropriate ages.

Anne is long gone, but her message for humanity lives on. I don't think my life & worldview would be the same if you have not allowed me to share those days in Amsterdam. Thank you, Anne.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must Read., May 9, 2009
This review is from: Diary of Anne Frank (Longman Imprint Books) (Paperback)
The Diary of Anne Frank is a must read for anybody. For those who don't know, it was written by a young Jewish girl who was hiding from the Nazis during World War II. It was eloquently written, especially considering the source. It's an eye opening read. Definitely read this.

I wish I would have read this a long time ago. Very enduring and very sad. This is one book I will reread. What an intelligent girl for such a young age.[[ASIN:058201736X Diary of Anne Frank (Longman Imprint Books)

5.0 out of 5 stars Heartfelt, poignant, inspiring, January 21, 2012
This review is from: Diary of Anne Frank (Longman Imprint Books) (Paperback)
I adore Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl and have read it multiple times over the years. Anne's diary has come to mean different things to me as I've grown older - when I first read it as a ten-year-old girl, I was fascinated by the hidden life she led with her family and there was a sense of dread and excitement about her precarious circumstances, the danger of being discovered. When I read Anne's diary again as a teenager, I came to empathize with Anne's frustrations with her mother and the other adults around her whom Anne felt did not understand her and treated her as a child. I felt Anne's desire to be 'heard' and not just treated as an inconvenience or child was so much aligned with what I was going through during adolescence.

When I re-read the diary as an adult, I came to appreciate all the other things - the tragedy of having lost such an amazing and talented young voice in the most horrible of circumstances; the beauty of Anne's writing which is all the more amazing given how young she was when she wrote this diary; and the themes of alienation, fear, and hope. Now, as the mother of a young daughter, I read this diary again and gain another fresh perspective - of the complex relationship between daughter and mother. Anne had a strained relationship with her mother Edith, and clearly gravitated toward her beloved Pim (father). This was obvious even before Anne and her family were compelled to move into hiding in the Annex. As a mother, reading Anne's thoughts about her mother (often unflattering) was a disconcerting experience, though things do improve somewhat later on.

Anne Frank's Diary of a Young Girl is a classic not only of Holocaust literature, but also a classic Young Adult read with its myriad themes that will appeal to both adolescents and adult readers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hoping History Doesn't Repeat, January 18, 2010
By
This review is from: Diary of Anne Frank (Longman Imprint Books) (Paperback)
The Diary of Anne Frank is a classic must-read for all young people, lest history repeat itself. I read it in High School and so have my daughters. I was saddened to see the passing of Miep Gies. Thanks to her, this piece of history was preserved. My praise goes to her and her attempt to save these people. It's strange that this resurgence coincides with the Military Channel's airing of "The World at War" which pictures Anne in the opening song amongst the flames.

3.0 out of 5 stars The Diary of Anne Frank Review, January 22, 2009
This review is from: Diary of Anne Frank (Longman Imprint Books) (Paperback)
The Diary of Anne Frank had many conflicts first going into hiding because the Germans are taking Jews and sending them to their death or killing them slowly torturing them and housing them in a harsh and dangerous environment. As they go into hiding they face rough times in what they call the Secret Annex. There are many to join in the Secret Annex which give the families many heartbreaks of argument to follow, with shortage of food supply and the worsening of the outside world, watching their loved ones taken and sent to their death makes the members break down even further. Also worrying about getting discovered and taken by the German Soldiers and facing their potential death as well, hallucinating from the noises from the down stairs warehouse.

The dislike I encountered with this novel was the set up of it, the diary form all though unique from most books bothered me, the pace of the book also bothered me it was slow and took awhile to get to the point of the conflict in the story. What I did like about the story was detail and that behind the book it was a true event and a young girl actually went through it, it was inspiring that after it all Anne was still positive and kept hope in the world.
