Book Description

October 25, 2006
A warm, candid look at the ups and downs of pregnancy and motherhood -- written by Jamie Oliver's wife

Being pregnant for the first time changed Jools Oliver’s life. Having longed for children as far back as she can remember, she was suddenly faced with an array of unfamiliar, unexpected, and sometimes downright embarrassing emotional and physical reactions. So when Poppy (and a year later, Daisy) was born, she had to learn a whole new set of skills.

From "minus nine" (her first positive pregnancy test) to "one" (Poppy’s first birthday), Jools takes you through the worries, surprises, excitement, miracles, and very hard work that she -- and all new moms in their own different ways -- had to face along the way.

Down to earth, personal, and very very funny, this is the book no aspiring mother will want to be without.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Memoirs on motherhood focus either on a particular aspect, like a preemie birth or juggling work and baby, or are otherwise beautifully written, capturing the dizzying highs and the treacherous lows of motherhood. Oliver's, unfortunately, is neither. Oliver, a former model married to Naked Chef Jamie Oliver, gave birth to two girls within a year of each other. Her memoir—which follows her pregnancy and the first year with her older child, Poppy—is littered with clichés and clunky writing ("Everything had to smell 'fresh' to me—that's the only way I can describe it. But, ironically, I didn't like air fresheners—oh, it's a barmy old world!") and some of British Oliver's advice runs counter to what most American OBs will tell you ("A good tip... was not to slather my nipples in specialized nipple cream but to allow them to dry and crack as this way they would become hardened to it and within weeks they would heal"). As much of the practical information is geared toward a U.K. audience, those looking for a solid baby advice/memoir book will do best to go elsewhere; those interested in a peek at baby rearing the celebrity way will enjoy the glimpses into Oliver's life and the wealth of photos of her and her family. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, October 27, 2006
This review is from: The Diary of an Honest Mum (Hardcover)
This is definitely a fun read. Moms out there will immediately feel a bond with Jools Oliver after reading this book. She's a dedicated, passionate Mom and she offers loads of girlfriend to girlfriend advice in this book. Only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is due to the fact I disagree with the fact she used the cry-it-out method, which is something I'm passionately against. However, all that aside, she seems totally down-to-earth and cool - someone I'd love to meet.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tired of the Criticism, July 18, 2007
As a mom of a 3 yr old, I loved this book. Let me preface this by saying: Jamie Oliver has single-handedly taught me to cook. When I purchased this book, I was interested in how other mothers are dealing with the "reality" of having babies/small children and I also love Jamie's recipes. When I saw that Jools had written this, I was naturally interested. I am tired of seeing the negative publicity surrounding her (Jools) and this book. This is simply a journal of her experience as she has chosen to write it. I give her credit because it can't be easy facing journalists and photographers daily and then the criticism of her book. If you are about to become a mom, are a mother to small children OR have had infertility problems, you will enjoy her book. I particularly enjoyed reading about her routines with her children, as I am always looking for ways to make my life easier. It was funny, honest and endearing. It is worth the money. Also: she includes some awesome recipes that my little girl loves.
