A book that really doesn't suck...,
By
This review is from: Diary of Indignities (Paperback)
Hughes is able to tell his stories with both humor and humanity. Everyone has tales of growing up, but this book is written at a level of skill very few story tellers could come close too even if their adventures were as notable. Through most of the book you will find yourself laughing out loud, but at least one chapter choked me up to the point I pronounced it as "the saddest thing I've ever read". Do yourself a favor and buy this book.

Patrick Hughes is an evil brilliant genius, carving his niche out of the publishing world with blood and bone and poo water.
You should buy this book. Not only will it make you smarter and better looking, it will also make you laugh until you cry. I'm not just saying this because he thanks me in the intro, either. He is a hilarious man, and this is an epic book of hilarious stories, well-told.

It's like sitting on the front porch with a crazy old man,

It feels good to laugh so hard you weep, and if you want to feel good like that, this is the book to get you there. Pat Hughes suffers the indignities, so you don't have do, and believe me there are woes visited upon this man the likes of which you have never imagined. Hughes' writing is engaging, and the whole thing is like sitting on the front porch with a world-class yarn spinner, slapping your thigh and guffawing every few minutes until everyone has to pause to catch their breath. Truly a must-have book.

This is real life, sort of,

Though this isn't overtly a book about punk-rock, I think it does a terrific job of conveying the spirit of the G'ville p-rock scene, at least as I experienced it from the mid-80s through the early 90s -- unpredictable, wild, sometimes downright dangerous, other times oddly quaint.
Patrick has more guts than I'm ever gonna have. Probably the same is true for you -- check out just how much he has to say about unrequited love, family dysfunctionality, rectal problems, roommate issues or saltwater catfish -- chances are you'll end up thinking "damn, how does this guy manage to show his face in public after all this?" He's a damn writer, that's how. Check it out....

Paperback blogger,

You have no idea what you are 1 click away from enjoying.
If Augusten Burroughs was an autobiographical (I, um mean, fiction) writer or if Chuck Palahniuk grew up in the south, or if "The Rooster" Sedaris wrote I think they would all be hanging out at the same bar swapping stories. This raw, real and self-deprecating writer will take you on a journey, will make you laugh out loud, will make you think (partly make you think you should write your own memoirs... but don't it wouldn't be as funny or well written). Kudos to the newest member of a great tradition

I nursed Patrick Hughes as a baby and reading this book has been a similar experience -- painful but intensely rewarding.

Laugh out loud funny,

For people who read a lot, it is still surprising to laugh out loud, open your mouth in surprise, gasp at the horror, open your eyes wide in disbelief or shedding a tear from hilarity or sadness just from reading a book. All of these things will happen when you read this book. The descriptive storytelling by Patrick Hughes will make you read this book as fast as you can because you want to know more. I can definitely relate to many of the stories that he tells, but in no way is anyone else's life nearly as crazy.

The funniest book I have ever read,
By
This review is from: Diary of Indignities (Paperback)
I've read a lot of funny books or the past 40-some-odd years and this is by far the funniest.
It makes a great gift for that friend you know that would understand and appreciate this "unique" style of humor. This book is absolutely hilarious!

I had to have a double root canal last week, and I was dreading the procedure. On the way to the dentist's office, I picked this book up to occupy time in the waiting room. After 45 minutes of reading, I was actually looking forward to the surgery so I could get away from this insanity!
I hope he writes another book by the time I have that colonoscopy.... |
