Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

The swings of emotion, the ups and downs of spirit, and the sometimes intemperate personal remarks recorded, give this diary the reality of Isle Royale as it was then--wonderous, awe inspriting, beautiful and majestic but countered by the isolation, the sometimes claustrophobic atmosphere, the weariness the immensity of the task, the very real hardships.

From the Author

The words that follow record the true feelings and unabridged thoughts of a dedicated teacher, a wonderful mother, and a great friend.

Bob Simonson, Editor

5.0 out of 5 stars Teacher spends winter of 1932-33 on Lake Superior island, June 20, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: The Diary of an Isle Royale School Teacher (Paperback)
An excellent book giving an insight of how one person experienced the isolated life of Isle Royale during one winter of 1932-33. This is a fast-reading book which is not easy to set down. Anyone who has visited the beautiful island of Isle Royale National Park should find this diary interesting and captivating. Book's epilogue and editorial notes by author's son add special insight.

5.0 out of 5 stars Like a captivity narrative with the U.S. economy as the captor., October 31, 2010

Fascinating read. Hard to set down. The journaling of one rugged, winter in the isolation of a stormy physical and severely limited social environment extracting their toll on a single mother and child, far from the familiarity of home and family during the depression of the early twentieth century.
