To all the so-called critics that tried to gave this movie a one-star to try to discourage people from seeing it, WELL........eat your hearts out, pick up your face and tuck your tail between your legs. This movie was an excellent combination of laughter and drama with some powerful messages, and he truly has a God-given talent to mix them all and come out with a HIT! I'm overjoyed that it debuted and NO. 1 at the box office. With God, you can't go wrong. Tyler, keep it coming!!! You got my FULL support!

5.0 out of 5 stars Funny! Entertaining!, March 10, 2005
This was a very entertaining movie. I hope Tyler Perry continues to make movies. It's like a breathe of fresh air to see something different. Madea is funny! I went to Tyler's plays and I was wandering how the movie would be different.
This movie deserves to be number one! Kudos to Tyler and his All Star cast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Off the hook, March 5, 2005
This movie could have been titled "Dairy of a mad woman, it really didn't matter whether she was black or white. It is a story of abuse, betrayal, and reaping what we have sown, and finally forgiveness. Color doesn't really matter, we all have been in an abusive relationship or know of someone who have been hurt because of abuse or a cheating spouse. ethnic backgound doesn't matter. You would not only be angry, you would be mad if it happened to you. Congratulations Tyler keep on keeping it real and we will keep watching. I love your plays, and own them all. NOT BOOTLEG. This one will be in my library as soon as available.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mad for the Mad Black Movie!!, February 28, 2005
Let me start off by saying that, in my town, the theater hasn't been sold out since Lord of the Rings...until now. And no actors had to draw swords to do it!

Helen is the lovely, meek wife of a very successful, very selfish attorney. She and Charles have been married 18 years and slowly she suspects he is seeing someone else. Surprise! Charles literally dumps poor Helen out of their magnificent house and moves in his woman-on-the-side. Since Helen realizes it's over and she has nothing, she seeks out her crazy grandparents,(Tyler Perry) for a place to live. It's there that Helen learns some revenge tips and self-esteem from gun-totin' Grandma Madea--And we all get to laugh out loud.

While the main storyline revolves around Helen getting on with her love life--and humorously getting even with her cruel ex-husband--there are lessons other characters are learning as well. And what makes this movie touching and tearful is the morals that each of them reach; about hanging on to a second chance, and learning to truly forgive those that have made your heart bitter and distrustful. Obviously, Diary teaches that we should show to others the compassion and forgiveness that Jesus showed to us. Only then do we truly move on to greater things.

4.0 out of 5 stars Get a Grip it's called "Entertainment", April 25, 2005
By
Ramsess "gray" (Fayetteville, North Carolina) - See all my reviews
I was appalled at the number of negative reviews on this movie coming from black folk. And yea I followed up on the rest of your reviews too and found that most bashed everything that they reviewed. Makes you wonder if they are not "Mad and Black". It is not that I expected everyone to love this movie, but nor did I expect the blatant disrespect of another man's craft as displayed in some of these reviews. When "Diary" opened in our city, it was sold out for days on end. The only way you were able to get a ticket was to buy one in advance and then show up an hour early on showing day. And our city is not a metro but it is not a one-stoplight town either. We have an abundant amount of theaters and Diary was showing on four screens at two of the larger complexes. People stood in line for hours in the pouring rain just to get a ticket for any showing possible. And for Mr. Perry it paid off, debuting at #1 on its opening weekend. Diary did its thing. And it is making Mr. Perry a wealthy man. $Ching Ching$. I was not moved when the "other critics" slammed the movie, saying it was one of the worst of the year. That I could stand. But now I read reviews from uppity black so called critics who now follow their lead. For what purpose do I ask? Once again I am not saying that everyone has to write a positive review.
This is called ENTERTAINMENT folk. Mr. Webster defines entertainment as "amusement". And that is exactly what Darren Grant, Mr. Perry, Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore and the rest of the cast did. This movie is very entertaining. No it is not an Epic, a Biography, or a True story. And it was never meant to be. It was just for pure fun and enjoyment with a subtle message. Well maybe it could be a true story since many of the situations and characters depicted live in our very own homes, towns and streets. Some probably even wrote a review. ; ) And naw, I am not saying it was the best picture either. I have seen some movies, both black and white, that were far better or worst. And adding to that, when have we as "Black Folk" won an Oscar for best film for any of our movies either produced or directed. So to say that it is not award winning is not saying much at all. I give Mr. Perry and cast an "A" for entertaining us. And that is exactly what Diary will do if you take off your rose-colored glasses, sit back, and attempt to enjoy this movie. By the way Kimberly Elise is so so fine. So stop the soapbox reviews and try to be encouraging.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diary of a Mad Black Woman, January 3, 2005
I watched a DVD of the original play from the year 2002 by Tyler Perry .... that was the most hilarious play I've seen in years and Mr. Perry should have definitely received an award of some type for his acting especially, and naturally for being the producer .... what a gifted brother. MAY GOD BLESS HIM !!

5.0 out of 5 stars Everyone should go see this movie!!!, April 21, 2005
I was a little unsure about paying money to see this film when it first came out. I am familiar with the hilarious plays done by Tyler Perry, but movies are on a totally different level. Once I walked in the theatre and watched the movie, I left amazed!! I can not believe that Tyler Perry is such a mastermind, being able to produce both plays and movies, and do a terrific job at both.

The movie is great for teenagers through senior citizens; it is very clean, with no foul language, and is filled with drama, humor, and reality. The film relates to life, and how you can move on from your past, discover who you are, and become a better person.

If you are worried about the actors in the film, put all of the fear aside!!! Some great and well known people were chosen for this film, Kimberly Elise, Shemar Moore, Steve Harris, Cicely Tyson, and of course Tyler Perry. All of these actors did a beautiful job and played the role so good that I actually forgot who they were.

Movies such as Big Momma's House have no comparison to this film, so if you enjoyed or didn't enjoy that movie, I guarantee that you will enjoy Tyler Perry's. Unlike Big Mommas House, Diary of a Mad Black Woman actually has meaning, and a story that you can relate too. Although you may enjoy only laughing throughout a film, Diary of a Mad Black Woman allows you to laugh, cry, love, and make your life better.

This is a wonderful film, and I ensure you that it will be worth your penny. Once you see the film, you will think that Tyler Perry has been creating films all of his life. You will shed tears of sorrow, as well as joy, and simply feel love and life. I give this film 5 stars and encourage all to go support.

5.0 out of 5 stars From A Diva Muslimah, March 30, 2005
It deeply saddens and hurts my heart to read so much negativity, back-biting, and over-all dislike of "The Diary Of A Mad Black Woman." Did anyone not get the message!!!

As a Muslim, I laughed, I cried (twice), and I identified with the relationship between Helen and Charles. Allah works in ways most don't people understand. The theme of this movie was REDEMPTION!!!!!!

This movie was a perfect example of letting go of emotional turmoil, the cycle of abuse, and finding Helen McCarter while putting her life "BACK IN GOD"S HANDS." I applaud Kimberly because she portrayed her role as an example of a God fearing wife. Helen stood by her husband's side as a WIFE until he was able to take care of himself.

The most important theme of this movie was "FAMILY STICKING TOGETHER." Helen's sister overcame her drug addiction--did anyone notice this part of the film. And I when she sang in church it reminded me of one thing: music definately brings people together because I was hummed right along with choir while CRYING.

Madeah is the bridge that keeps this family together. At times she was hilarious but her advice was very straight forward and simple. Madeah was there for Helen as an advisor during this movie. And I'd like to say this--this movie was titled "Diary Of A Mad Woman." Madeah wasn't mad Helen McCarter was mad and if you can't see that then I'd advice you to return to the movie theatre and watch this movie again.

The problem with most African-Americans is that we simply don't believe in finding love, keeping love, or we have low self-esteem. This was a love story pure and simple. We need more movies like this in HOLLYWOOD. You can only bling-bling so long. Shoot up bang bang has gone out of style.

LET'S TAKE TIME FOR LOVE. LET'S LEAVE A LASTING IMPRESSION ON OUR TEENAGERS.

Tyler Perry WRITE ON! You've come this far by faith. Keep up the good work.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie!, March 6, 2005
I loved the movie. Any other time, I would summerize the movie, but this movie you have to see for yourself. Madia sputs spice in the movie, and by the end of the movie, your side will be hurting from laughing so hard. This movie has what every good movie needs: hilarious jokes, romance, scenes that tear your heart out, and a very, very, very good looking man named Shamar Moore.

4.0 out of 5 stars Put your education aside to enjoy this film., March 8, 2005

I had always thought that I would never watch a Tyler Perry film because I thought that they were just for people who were uneducated holy rollers. I saw the new movie recently. I went because I wanted to see Shemar Moore and Kimberly Elise. They were both extraordinary. I expected lots of loud gospel music and stereotypes, and I found them, but I also found a sensitive and tender love story that surprised me. If you get a chance to see it at a theater or buy it when it becomes available you should see it. There is a lot of simple wisdom and just plain fun in this movie. I loved it and I plan to buy some of Tyler Perry's work. I need to laugh more and Madea had me laughing so hard that I got a pain in my stomach.
