Oh, the madness!!,
By
This review is from: Diary of a Mad Bride (Paperback)
I haven't laughed this hard since reading the Shopaholic books by Sophie Kinsella! Laura Wolf is undoubtedly an entertaining, funny, talented writer, and she had me in stitches more times than I can count. I highly enjoyed Diary of a Mad Bride and can't wait to read her next book.Meet Amy Thomas -- a self-proclaimed anti-marriage posterwoman. I mean, why fix it when it isn't broke, right? Amy is wildly in love with Stephen and the marriage question hasn't even come up, which suits her just fine. Why turn herself into a crazy woman with all those nutty, self-absorbed, time-consuming wedding plans anyway? Then out of the clear, blue sky, Stephen proposes and opens up a whole new world for Amy. One she didn't even know she wanted. Follow Amy on her hilarious (I mean, of the knee-slapping kind) journey from normal, satisfied woman to harried wedding planner of the worst kind. And relish every step of the way. Written in easy to read diary form, Diary of a Mad Bride is addictive and breezy and the pages will fly right by -- which can be a bad thing since you really don't want the book to end! Amy is endearing, her two friends, Mandy and Anita, are priceless in their own crazy way, and the families-in-law are almost too much to bear. Prepare to laugh and your mood to be lifted -- this novel is the best medicine. Looking forward to reading futher Mad adventures.

This book was absolutely hilarious!! I picked it up seeking a funny, light, enjoyable read after some of the heavier themed books I've finished, and I sure found it!This book zips right along, formatted as diary entries of Amy Thomas, whose friends it seems are all getting married, and going crazy. Amy vows never to become a crazy, delusional bride-to-be. But when Stephen her boyfriend proposes to her, things quickly start spinning out of control. Before she knows what's happening, she's second guessing her antique engagement ring, the way Stephen proposed, her wedding dress, and fighting in public about her bridal flowers! As soon I finished this book I IMMEDIATELY picked up the next one, Diary of a Mad Mother-To-Be, and am half-way through already. I highly recommend this book, it's fast-paced and VERY funny! A great book for future brides, married women, or anyone even remotely interested in weddings!

Read it in one day!,

I feel like I have gone above and beyond the call of duty when it comes to supporting soon-to-be-wed friends, so when I read the main character, Amy, think to herself, "What is it about a wedding that turns an otherwise normal person into a raging narcissist?" I knew I had to get this book. While I agree with other reviewers that Amy went improbably quickly from "I'm not the marrying kind" to "I'm engaged!" her metamorphasis from normal person to raging narcissistic diva without even being aware of it was truly hilarious. As the last single woman in my circle of friends, it has been my job to listen to all of my friends obsess over napkin monograms, length of corsage stems, pastel versus white jordan almonds, and all of the other incredibly important details about their weddings. The only thing that gets me through it is the tiny hope that, someday, it will be my turn to drive them insane! If you are married, engaged, or single, this book will speak to you. I highly recommend it!

The other reviewers have pretty much covered my feelings about this book. It's light, its funny, and its true to life. The bride starts out sensible and sane - not wanting to be like any of her friends who have gotten married. She thinks all she needs to keep her perspective is a good list and maybe one bridal book to refer to.She makes the list, buys the bridal book, then adds to the list. She has to change the wedding date so it doesn't interfere with basketball season (or any other sport) and slowly loses her sense of humor, her friends and even her groom (temporarily). Her wedding dress is a story in itself and the final madness seems to hinge on the search for wedding shoes! I enjoyed the book immensely - could there maybe be a sequel??

Got this book on a whim, needing some fun, light reading, and I've been giggling since page one! Only read this in public if you don't mind people staring at you funny for lauging out loud...The back cover reads, "...for anyone who has ever been a bride, is about to become a bride, or suffered the sheer indignity of appearing in public in the world's ugliest bridesmaid dress...." Include in this any single woman who has suffered knowing a bride-to-be who can talk about nothing other than the up-coming wedding plans! In other words, I think any female will be amused with Amy's story...

So True to Life!,

Anyone who had recently gotten married or is planning on getting married soon should read this book for a good laugh. The events chronicled by Sarah in this book ring so true to life. For those who have gotten married, you'll get a good laugh out of how some of these same things happened to you. And for those who are planning the big day, it's nice to know that you're not alone and you will be able to relate to the main character. This book puts a funny spin on real life wedding planning events. I highly recommend this book to all women who are married or hope to be married someday...and ESPECIALLY to bridesmaids-to-be who haven't been married yet - so that way you can get a glimpse of what the bride-to-be is going through so you can be more understanding and help her keep it together until the wedding day.

Told in diary form by Amy and spread out over the course of a year, "Diary of A Mad Bride" is an occasionally amusing novel about the events leading up to the marriage of Amy Thomas and Stephen Stewart. As the book opens, Amy's friend Mandy is in a dither about getting married and Amy swears that she'll never get married. Of course, she quickly changes her mind when Stephen proposes but she then swears that she won't be as uptight about her wedding as Mandy was. Naturally that too changes, as Amy encounters all kinds of calamities leading up and including her wedding day. This is a light and at times funny novel. Anyone who's been married, is about to be married, or been a bridesmaid will recognize some of the problems Amy goes through while planning her wedding. Amy's mood swings are particularly funny and there's a lot of reality in her attempts to juggle planning the wedding and working full time. But she too often seems almost disconnected from her own wedding. Although she makes incredibly long lists of things to do for the wedding, she never makes much progress on them. Far too many scenes seem to be written just for the humor - it can't be that difficult to find the perfect wedding gown in all of New York City and I find it hard to believe that Amy would agree to wear her mother's wedding gown sight unseen. And, I realize the book was written this way for the humor, but the wedding felt rushed, especially due to the lack of money Amy and Stephen had. Other scenes that potentially could be mined for humor like trying to figure out place settings, a headache for any bride are left untouched. And what bride would not be involved in picking out the Maid of Honor and Bridesmaid dresses? Or just go to the hairdresser the day of the wedding and let the hairdresser do what they want? In the end, "Diary of A Mad Bride" seems to have been written in much the same rush as Amy and Stephen's wedding was planned. It's an okay read, but with a little more preparation it could have been great reading.

I read this book about a year and a half ago when I was planning my wedding. I was SO stressed out and was planning a wedding that I didn't want but my husband-to-be did. So this book really let me laugh at all of the things that I was stressing out about. I have recommended it to all of my bride-to-be friends as a way to lighten their mood.
