Editorial Reviews

Review

"In his first book, Grammy Award-winning country star Paisley pays tribute to the legendary musicians who helped him along the way. Any guitar aficionado will love this tale of extraordinary musicians gladly guiding a talented youngster—a journey that began at the tender age of eight when Paisley's grandfather gave him his first guitar. With the collaboration of Wild, who is steeped in the country music scene, Paisley offers a story accessible even to country novices...Paisley certainly entertains in this charming story of his road to success."

Publishers Weekly, starred review

"Brad Paisley knows a thing or two about writing hooks for general music fans while still throwing in enough guitar pyrotechnics to keep his guitar-playing audience happy, if not slightly stunned."

Premier Guitar

"Paisley and Wild write in an easygoing, personal style that suggests the experience of actually sitting down with the musician and hearing him describe his life in music and the lessons he's learned. Verdict: A must-read for any fan of Paisley, this book really tells readers what makes him tick. Highly recommended for all country fans."

Library Journal

"Country singer Brad Paisley is known as a man of many guitars, but none of these collectibles is as dear to him as the mail order Sears Danelectro Silvertone his grandfather bought him when he was eight. It is memories like this that make this autobiography such a vivid, personal document. By recalling the instruments that gave him a voice and a career, Paisley presents a far more intimate self-portrait than those rendered by fame-driven musicians. As he writes, 'There are some people who drink, who seek counseling, eat, or watch TV, cry, sleep, and so on. I play.' A memorable, amenable memoir."

In 1980 when Warren Jarvis gave his 8-year old grandson a guitar for Christmas, no one at the time knew the musical power he had unleashed, or the chain of events that would propel this young West Virginian three decades later to become one the world's most regarded guitarists and "CMA Entertainer of the Year".

"Diary of Player" is Brad Paisley's candid and gracious account of the musical mentors and other forces in life that shaped his two musical voices, guitar playing and songwriting, and connects the dots through his career of collaborations with some of the best players in country, blues, and rock.

Told with Paisley's trademark wit, this 30-year narrative does not follow the insta-fame, super-idol script of late but rather portrays the years of hard work and life's compromises in pursuing one's dream, reaching it, and then some. Chronologically, it's an account of thousands of hours of practice, small gigs becoming bigger gigs, early discovery by some Country legends, songwriting, and touring. But at its core, it's a story of knowing one's bliss in life, following it, and simply not quitting.

Many will enjoy this book as I did. For Paisley fans, it's simply required reading (it'll be on the test). Gear heads will no doubt lap up the pages discussing VOX AC30 and other guitar amp minutia. Aspiring artists, and parents thereof, will take comfort in knowing even guitar gods struggle in their early years and grades aren't necessarily a showstopper in life. And everyone will enjoy reading a story about a nice guy actually finishing first.

I've never written a review before, but I loved this book so much that I had to let everyone know! This book was well written and entertaining to read. I cried a little and laughed a whole lot. Once, I picked this book up. I just couldn't put it down. I wanted to know more and more on what made Brad the "player" he is today.
Thank you, Papaw Jarvis for that wonderful gift you gave to Brad as a child. We all appreciate it.

It isn't an autobiography. As Paisley himself says, he's too young to warrant that. It starts out hinting that it's a story to serve as guidance to budding guitarists. But other than alluding to how much he practiced, there's precious little here about how he developed his craft. He touches briefly on AC30 amps, but amazingly there's hardly any mention of the Dr Z amps he's closely associated with. And there's nothing at all about technique. The brief comments about his thinking behind song writing are surprisingly shallow.

What this is, is a 250-page shout out to the people in his life who have encouraged him. Some of those stories are interesting and even touching. There is little doubt Brad has a wonderful personality that matches his awesome talent, a rare combination indeed. From the descriptions of the people who have entered his life and affected him, you really get an appreciation for how he got to be a first class person.

In the end though, this book is really written for those people he wants to thank, and that's a commendable gesture on Paisley's part. For the rest of us though, there's not much to be gleaned from this book.

I really enjoyed reading about brad paisley and those who have inflluenced him to become who he is today. I was a little disappointed in this kindle book though, I know we missed out on some pictures and I also think there was some text that we couldn't read.

I wish there was a trade up program to get the hard copy now.

Yeah I have been anticipating the books arrival since July so I purchased the book on it's release date at midnight. It was delivered to my kindle at 03 past the hour. I think I was the first in the time zone to read it. I love the book. very interesting. Especially learning about his gear and beginnings. Very humble, greatful and willing to share his talents. Great guitar player, great man, great book.

David Wild and Brad Paisley did a wonderful job at writing this book. In Diary of a Player Brad tells us all about how his musical heroes influenced his career in one way or another to help him get where he is. His hard work is portrayed throughout the whole book. You come across his witty sense of humor in many instances where you can not help but laugh. Brad shows us that it was true dedication and strong work ethic that got him to be the great guitar player he is.

I cried, I laughed, I shook my head at Brad's humor. I honestly enjoyed the book and I believe that a guitar player or anyone who respects an enthusiastic and diligent person, such as Brad, will appreciate reading Diary of a Player.

If you know anything at all about guitar or know someone who plays, this book is going to make you laugh and smile and cry. He knows how to get right to the heart of the matter. I love his stories and the way he tells them. This is a must-read for a Brad Paisley fan, but is even better for someone who plays guitar as well.
