Fun to Read, Some Nits to Pick,

I enjoyed reading this. The characters were interesting in their eccentricities, and it was a milieu I haven't read much about, which made for a nice change. The author had the good sense, in my opinion, to keep the story mostly about the title situation, rather than delving too deeply into Sloan's personal life outside the station. This kept the book moving along well without bogging down into the story of a single girl's life with her pets. The story stayed nicely in the area of kooky or goofy without going off the rails into sheer lunacy or unbelievability. Now for the nits - I realize not everyone considers spelling and grammar as major factors or important to a review. However, they do distract me and detract from the reading experience, and the errors do affect my opinion of the quality of the material. I would suggest that the author establish a relationship with a proofreader/editor. Homonyms seem to be a particular problem, with errors like "dissent (descent) into the bowels"; "death throws (throes)"; "peak (peek) out the blinds." Steve Perry sang for Journey, not Aerosmith. One "turns heel" (she turned on her heel). Comma placement is a bit erratic at times.

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with this book! The characters were well formed and I enjoyed visualizing each of them and their eccentricities. I laughed out loud several times while reading and more than a handful of times I had to wake my husband to read something to him. The main character, Sloan, has a subtly (opposed to obnoxiously) sarcastic way of looking at the people around her and noticing the details of their character. At times, I wondered how she didn't just start screaming at them all--she's like the accountant in the circus! Descriptions were wonderful and made an impression on me--when I listen to NPR now, I have to stop to think of what the people behind the voices might *actually* be like. This book is a great switch up from typical story lines and would make an awesome sitcom!

This book would fit well as a beach read or an easy, I-need-to-be-entertained mood anytime. The characters are loopy and highly eccentric and I can envision them all - having worked as a volunteer for a few weeks at a public radio station in Chicago. Will look now for other works by this author who obviously has a gift for grown up comedy.

Got this book for free and really enjoyed the character development- could totally imagine working with these crazy people in this office. Nice story- short and easily readable in a day or two- used it for bedtime reading and could immediately get back into the people after an intervening day. Would recommend it.

Love this book. Well written, well prosed, I loved Sloan but mustly I love that I could identify myself with her because I have been the sane person in a office full of nuts and crazy people. Horribly written. Misplaced comma mania and misused words kept me from moving past page 10. Kind of funny to see the name for a receptacle for burning things (brazier) used for the item intended for burning (brassiere)Can't make it any further. This author needs to go back to school or hire an editor. |
