Interesting book about a single woman's sex life.,
By
This review is from: Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind (Paperback)
I guess I will give this book 5 stars, not because it is a literary classic, but because it is probably the best book of its kind--a sex blog edited into book form.
Abby Lee, subsequently "outed" as a London film technician Zoe Margolis, is a single woman in her thirties who spends a lot of time masturbating, having casual sex, and thinking about sex. She is very orgasmic and wonders if she is a nymphomaniac. Although the book is well written, witty, and contains lots of ruminations and information about sex, Abby/Zoe comes across as somewhat charmless and self absorbed, but we should probably discount this as, by definition, such qualities are surely innate to sex blog creators. Her online blog has been tremendously successful, and judging by the responses written by readers, appeals very much to the woman who leads an outwardly respectable life, but enjoys reading about another outwardly respectable woman who lives out her sexual fantasies, both for her own pleaure, and that of her readers while still remaining solidly middle class and easy to identify with. While sex blogs by prostitutes and/or escorts are two a penny, she is careful to distance herself from this field and expresses revulsion at the idea of selling sex. The author, like Bridget Jones, likes to compile lists of pros and cons, for example the pros and cons of large penises vs. smaller penises, which make interesting reading and are almost worth the price of admission on their own. I won't state her conclusions here in case I spoil it for you. The book is not particularly titillating, so readers looking for [...] fodder probably won't find much here. Although the author has a great sex life--at least it is great in terms that most men and some women would appreciate, in that she has many partners and lots of orgasms--there is a certain melancholic tone too. She is lonely and wants a real relationship, but while she can find sexual satisfaction with almost anyone, like Grace Slick in the heyday of Jefferson Airplane, she needs somebody to love, and that is what she does not have. You can speculate, if you wish, as to whether her supercharged sex drive is just evolution's way of telling her to start a family, but perhaps that is just going too far. She also seems to drink a lot, and while drinking is very much part of the London metrosexual culture, where it pretty much assumed that getting wasted is a good type of foreplay, I suspect that her appetites for both alcohol and sex are a standard deviation or two towards the higher end of the curve, though how they correlate is not made exactly clear in the book. Anyhow, the book is a minor classic, and if you are interested in sex--which a lot of people are--and you are not easily shocked, you will want to read this so that you will know what all the fuss is about, and have lots of ready-made conversation topics at your fingertips.

Wild and Extremely Liberated Single lady's Account,
By Ashok A (Hyderabad, India) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind (Paperback)
This book is a completely uninhibited one year diary about a single lady's obsession with sex, experiments (bisexual, threesomes, s&m, you name it and it is there...) and her attempt to get into a serious relationship. It is very British in its language but the British slang makes it really warm. There are lots of (helpful?) sexual and relational tips for both men and women. And the eroticism hits you pleasantly. Definitely worth a read.

If you can read between the lines, this is sort of pathetic,
This review is from: Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind (Paperback)
Yes, this is supposed to be some tale of a "liberated" woman, charged with the realization that she can be sexual and not feel bad for it. The fact that she sleeps with 5 guys a month is not slutty or a sign of clear mental problems, its "empowering".
Ok, I guess, as far as that goes The funny/sad part of this book though (and how you take the book will depend almost entirely on your ability to see what Abby really means when she writes something) is when she writes a story about something and tries to convince herself that there's more to her life than there really is For instance, at one point about halfway through the book, Abby decides that she's horny and wants to have sex. This is pretty common, but in this particular case she decides she wants to go to a swingers club. Only, she doesn't want to go alone. So what does she do? First, she runs down the list of all the guys she knows who she has slept with, none of whom want to go with her. She justifies this with various reasons like "because we don't want to mess up our friendship by sleeping together". Apparently sleeping with her the once was enough for all of her male friends Anyway, after naming off every guy she knows who doesn't want to have sex with her, she finally decides to call up her ex-bf, who she apparently hasn't talked to in quite some time, like a year or something. So, out of the blue she texts him or something and asks him to come to this swinger thing and have sex with her, and then gets explicit about all the things she wants to do with/to him. She leads the reader to believe that she's chosen this ex because she has finally gotten to the point where she's over him, and so would be able to bed him and not care about it. Really though, its pretty obvious that she's already tried every guy she knows and is getting desperate So what happens? He texts her back a polite no, explaining that he has a gf now and spends his weekends with her and wouldn't feel right about it, plus he doesn't think he'd be able to lie to his gf about it in any case Of course, this makes Abby explode with rage. She would have you believe that its because this gf is the one he was cheating on Abby with, and that this guy dating her is proof somehow about how shallow and empty his life is, and how shallow and empty he is That's right, the woman who is so desperate for sex that she's calling practical strangers and asking them to take her to a swinger fest for group sex is lashing out at someone for how shallow and empty and immature it is to have a gf that you see every weekend. Go figure In another, similarly telling, chapter of the book, Abby writes a good deal about how she thinks about sex all the time, mentally undresses every decent looking man she meets, she specifically says she stares at almost every man's crotch as she passes them on the street or sits across from them on the tube, etc. Basically just makes a giant deal over how obvious her lust is In another post/chapter she talks a great deal about her revealing outfits and how she likes to show off her breasts THEN, in the height of hypocrisy again, she writes a new chapter about how degrading it is for the woman and how utterly rude it is for the man when a man looks at a woman's chest area in public. Seriously, she actually goes on about this for several pages, trying to moralize about how men are, and how women just tolerate the massive hurt this causes in semi-silence, and how she actively scowls at any guy who looks at her chest to discourage them Obviously, taken all together, these three chapters make her seem very strange, at least. She enjoys obviously sexualizing random strangers in public, enjoys flaunting her body in public, but if a guy dares to look back, he is scum. This whole book is full of bizarre stories and attitudes like this. Honestly I was left with the impression (never stated, and I would say worked hard to avoid by Abby) that Abby Lee's life is pretty empty and that most of her male colleagues probably don't think much of her, and most of her ex-bf's or ex-one night stands or whatever don't think much of her either So she tries to make herself feel better by talking about how free she is, and how her lifestyle is a sign of her maturity or whatever. It'd be tragic if it weren't so ridiculous. Over and over again, she tells stories of how she gets rejected by guys because of her behaviour, then spins the story into some kind of commentary on modern society or something, when really its just about normal people avoiding desperate skanks they come across in bars I tried to think of a nicer way to say that, but couldn't think of one. Anyway, about the only reason to read this is to either laugh at Abby and her strange way of running her sex life, or I guess if you buy into the whole promiscuity = power thing then this could become your new Bible. If neither of those ideas appeal to you, you may as well skip it

Racy and smart and fun,
By Bob Fitzsimmons (New York City) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind (Paperback)
This erotic memoir is one of the most fun and real I've ever read. Abby is sexy and smart and adventurous and willing to share openly and honestly with the reader--because this book began as a blog and because she wrote it under an assumed name. If you want to know what a modern woman is really thinking--about sex and relationships and more sex, this is a great book.

Edgy but pathetic,
This review is from: Diary of a Sex Fiend: Girl with a One Track Mind (Paperback)
This is an interesting read but overall I was disappointed in the main character. She is kind of pathetic at times, stooping low to get sex. I can't respect a girl who uses the internet to meet guys so she can hopefully have sex with them. Also she acts desperate around men who have previously rejected her. This is why I couldn't fully appreciate the material. If she wants to be liberated and have sex with whoever, then all the power to her, but she took it too far. If your looking for a book about a girl who acts like a guy, this is not the one. She does love sex, but she mixes feelings into it a lot. There are a lot of interesting topics in the book, but her writing is mediocre. I still read the whole thing though, because it does keep your interest.

I read this a good while ago. It was fine, but too long and too much ultimately. I'm sure it was a much better blog.
