5.0 out of 5 stars Petey Raises The Game Up To New Levels
nothing i say will give this CD, or petey pablo for that matter, due credit. i haven't decided which track is my favorite yet because they are all good enough to be that favorite track. petey's southern style and soul coming form the heart and saying what he feels on every track just caught me as a listener and is sure to catch others as well. the instrumentals on this CD...

3.0 out of 5 stars Carolina's on the Map
One thing that I can really appreciate about Petey Pablo is that he has a unique sound. He can give a track some meaning, some soul, and some thought. He doesn't get stuck some of the more standard themes in modern rap, but rather tries to put something behind his music rather than laying out some meaningless drivel to accompany a creative beat. A couple noticable themes...

nothing i say will give this CD, or petey pablo for that matter, due credit. i haven't decided which track is my favorite yet because they are all good enough to be that favorite track. petey's southern style and soul coming form the heart and saying what he feels on every track just caught me as a listener and is sure to catch others as well. the instrumentals on this CD are off the hook, and several are produced by Timbaland who has laced everything from "big pimpin'" to the new bubba sparxxx hit "ugly." i recommend "i", "funroom", "la di da da da", and "petey pablo" for starters, then move into "fool for love" and other more seriosu tracks towards the end of the CD. petey doesn't fail to bring anything to the table, and after listening, you'll be ready to re-play it over and over again. the source gave this cd 4 mics, i give it two thumbs, 5 mics, and mad props. buy this album, it's an instant classic.

A couple noticable themes include, well, putting North Carolina on the "rap map" for one I suppose, but also an inner struggle between good and evil within himself. I find both the theme and the way he presents it a refreshing clash to the common, more boring rap themes.

I think, despite the success of "Raise Up", that "Diary of a Sinner" is one of the better tracks on the album, as Pablo sort of shows us what drives him and artistically conveys his thoughts in ways that most wouldn't even approach for fear of being labeled 'soft'. Let me assure you that the word 'soft' has no business being mentioned with Petey Pablo.

The beats on this album are nothing short of good, but I wouldn't go as far as to say that they are fantastic. Timbaland shows up a couple of times, enhancing the depth of the album. The first five tracks are solid, with "Told Y'all" as a personal favorite, but there are a few of the tracks that just seem like filler to me. The CD seems to tail off before ending strong with "Diary of a Sinner". Most people will find themselves focusing on a few songs and ignoring the others - depending on taste.

Overall, I am impressed with Petey Pablo's freshman album. With a little more experience, he could rise to an elite level. The potential is there. The voice is there. The beats are there. It just needs a little more work.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst Dirty South Album!, April 24, 2006
This review is from: Diary of a Sinner: 1st Entry (Audio CD)
This CD was the most messed up CD, I ever listened to especially because there was no hot songs on there except for "Raise Up", "Raise Up (All Cities)", and "Told Y'all". That's about it nothing else is hard. Do not buy this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diversity in music, February 10, 2004

Some of the people postin' reviews need to take a look at the overall picture of just what is being said about this cd. There is no real consensus. Some people love the party songs. Others love the serious songs. Some like certain specific songs and hate others for no other reason than personal taste. I've rarely seen a cd portrayed in so many different ways by the reviewers on amazon. I have owned the cd since pretty soon after it came out and rarely post reviews on here but I felt that commenting on this one just seemed like the right thing to do after reading most of the reviews. The sheer diversity of styles used by Petey is remarkable. He tries things both lyrically and musically that most artists wouldn't touch. A lot of people will say they should've stayed that way and others will say that it's a good thing. Whatever. Roughly the first half of the cd is party tracks and the second half is slower, more serious, more introspective tracks. If nothing else, he has an artistic vision as can be seen in the last half with songs like Writing in My Diary and My Testimony. He is also quite capable of making a party track with distinctly southern flavors to it. Personally, I have noticed that he seems to be in a place of maturing into an adult, enjoying making party tracks as well as having figured some stuff out about the world and who he really is. If nothing else, it will be interesting to see what he does in his new CD, which will hopefully be released in March 2004 as it now says on here. It is true that some of the beats aren't perfect and neither are some of his rhymes, but the sheer diversity of his music and what he brings into rap is remarkable. I can't give it 5 stars because it really isn't a perfect album. Overall, though, it's better than the vast majority of mainstraim rap and certainly there's something on here for everyone.

Petey deserves more props on dis' one than any thing[including a wack ass review from "Like that"]. I really admire his style and reppin' a city not too far from where I am. Yes that's right I'm from Memphis,Tn.,a place where true artist really don't get the props they really deserve such as [playa fly, etc.,]. Much props to one of the greatest producers of all time [keep up the good work anyway] TIMBALAND!!!! much props to bubba sparxxx!! That damn "Still writin' in my diary" need to gone drop!!! In my review all i'm sayin' is if people were to get this album they truly won't regret it!!! And it ain't just no damn football stadium music either gottdamnit!!! It can be bumped any where; in the car, at work, outside, and especially in da' club shawty.!!! Oh and kinfolk, don't forget my favorites are I,919,live debaco, fool for love[every true thug can relate to a lowdown ass female],raise up,truth about me, ya'll aint ready[they asses still ain't; and hatin'], i told ya'll, la di da da da, funroom, do dat, didn't I, and test of my faith. 4.0 out of 5 stars A must have, May 29, 2003

I first heard this on the radio in my home state of NC at first where of course the single "Raise up" was blowin up, playin every 5 minutes on the radio. I heard it and said whoa this dude's gotta pretty good flow plus he's from nc I'll give it a try". I didn't regret it and I'm sure you won't either. While the timbaland producing might lead you to think this is his project, it's not. Petey more than holds his own over his own beats. Almost 2 years after it came out, it's still one the albums I can put in the car and everyone loves it. If you can pick it up, I recommend doin so. The hit Raise Up will no doubt take you back to summertime when you heard it and the rest of the album will show you why petey is a force that's up and coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Album Ever, October 22, 2002

If you haven't got this CD yet then you are missing out on the best unheard music out there. He is the most underrated rapper in the game (He doesn't deserve that). His beats and rhymes are unlike no other. Git it while its hot.

I couldn't wait for this album to drop. It finally did and it didn't come to how I would expect it to be. I'm not saying the album is garbage, it's different from any other rap albums. The production could of been better. I thought this album would be more on the Lil' Jon, UGK, or Mystikal flava. What saves the album are the songs Raise Up + the remix and I. "I" is the best song on the album and I can listen to it over and over again. Tracks from 5-10 are OK and the rest are hmmmmmmmm. I like Petey Pablo as a rapper and I hope next time he should have Tim produce the album. Timbaland is one of the hottest producers.

THIS ALBUM IS WACK. I THINK THAT PETEY SHOULD HAVE WENT BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD BEFORE RELEASING THIS ALBUM. ITS ONLY 2 GOOD SONGS ON THE ALBUM. ALSO TIMBALAND BEATS ARE STARTING TO GET VERY TIRED. DO YOUR SELF A FAVOR AND AVOID
