Book Description

September 1, 1995
"War seems inevitable," wrote Judith W. McGuire in her diary on 10 May 1861, shortly after the firing on Fort Sumter. Fervently loyal to the South, she was packing up valuables at her home in Alexandria, Virginia, where the Confederate flag already waved. With her family she fled the city, and for the next four years she would be a refugee in her own land.

Literate and newsy, shrewdly detailed and extremely moving, Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War is one of the best civilian records of the Civil War. Judith McGuire, the wife of an Episcopal minister, follows the newspapers assiduously, taking heart from good reports out of Bull Run and Shiloh and fighting despair when the tide turns against the Rebels. She sews for the soldiers, nurses them in hospitals, and notes the deaths of friends in battle: "Thus we bury, one by one, the dearest, the brightest." Steeling herself, she sees humor in desperate situations.

McGuire shares common hardships, struggling to obtain food and lodging, but her position permits a glimpse of wartime Richmond society and meetings with General and Mrs. Robert E. Lee. Always up and doing, scorning slackers and defeatists, she confides to her diary on a dark day, "I wish I could sleep until the war is over."

4.0 out of 5 stars Diary of a Southern Refugee During the War: By a Lady of Vir, January 11, 2001
This review is from: Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by a Lady of Virginia (Paperback)
I am a student of history and am doing my final thesis on southern woman during the civil war. Thus, I have had to wade through numerous diaries to find what I am looking for. I was very impressed with this diary because it was well written and very intersting to read. I feel that it has something for everyone. It touches your heart strings with it's descriptors and the evident feeling behind them and it also gives awsome accounts of battles though letters and second-hand information. If you are in anyway interested in the civil war, then this is a wonderful book to start your journey with.

5.0 out of 5 stars Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, February 2, 2009
This review is from: Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by a Lady of Virginia (Paperback)
This book made me feel like I was right there with the people during the War. I feel it shows the readers how the people felt during that period. Although these were people of some means and the book showed you what they gave up it also let you know what the people that had little or nothing gave for their country during this period. I loved this book and know I will read it again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Runaway Judith: Shed No Tears for Her, August 6, 2001

This review is from: Diary of a Southern Refugee during the War, by a Lady of Virginia (Paperback)
This is the sort of book that reminds you why the Confederacy lost. Women were more interested in their own fashion, etc., than in the travails of their newfound republic. The feeble introduction fails to highlight this fact.
