5.0 out of 5 stars Great for pest control for animals
I read about DE and thought I would give it a try before the hot summer approached and the flys. I use this mainly to control fly larvae in horse manure piles. I sprinkle on manure 2x a week - I clean the corrals once a week and have not found any larvae. The fly population has been noticably decreaced. I also use this on the dogs for fleas. Also sprinkle all around...

3.0 out of 5 stars Messy to use but seems effective, must have lots of patience and willpower.
I decided to give this a try for flea control in the house and on the pets since I was looking for something nontoxic, more natural than chemical soup pesticides.

First, the BAD: This is VERY VERY messy and hard to use if you don't have a duster tool, which I don't. I ended up with clumps of the powder everywhere and when I tried to brush it into my carpet...

Safe for people & pets. You can even eat it or mix it in pet or livestock food to kill internal parasites. It's a top safe flea powder too... oderless. Sprinkle it in your garden, basement, under the sofa cushions, under the carpet, mattress & the bugs are gone safely. Still works if it gets wet.

Mixed with water and sprayed on the foundation of our house (inside and out). Really stopped the annual migration of spiders and millipedes into our home, and it's pet friendly!

I recently bought some kitchen cabinets from Home Depot, that came complete with cockroach eggs. (My house got infested with roaches that aren't indigineous to this area and I never had roaches here before the cabinets) I sprinkled DE all around my house, inside and out. After one treatment and about five days I haven't seen anything crawling on my floors or walls but I have been picking up dead roaches and spiders. Although my floors don't look so great coated with powder, I feel my pets and I remain safe with the powder everywhere. I'm about ready to sweep the remainder of the powder up to the floor boards and clean up the rest of the mess. Fortunately DE made safe and chemically free quick work of eliminating these critters in my house. I highly recommend using the powder for elimation of fleas as well.

I use this as a flea powder and insecticide for outdoor and feral cats. As a food grade product I sprinkle it around their feeding areas to keep flys away, on their bedding and in their fur when I can get close. When I take the feral cats to the vet they rarely have fleas or ticks. It works great. It is much cheaper than any flea treatment.
My other main use for this is in the garden as an insecticide. I try hard to keep it away from flowers so that bees can pollinate, rather I sprinkle it on the ground and stems.
As a physical insecticide for pets and plants the down side is that it washes away easily so re-treatment is needed.
This stuff is great and I cannot understand why it is not used and recommended by vets and gardeners more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Organic pest control, simple and easy, April 3, 2009

This product, diatomaceous earth, is a silica compound made from ancient seas and fossils. When roaches crawl over even a fine dusting, the crystals puncture and dehydrate the insect. I have been using it in my basement, especially around the water heater and drain pipe, and under the sinks as here in Albuquerque roaches mostly come in through the water systems. All I ever see is a few very dead roaches that make it past the waterheater/furnace room!

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Stuff!!!, February 21, 2008
This review is from: Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 10 Lb (Kitchen)
DE, or Diatomaceous Earth, is a product I have used for about a year now. If you are planning to use it for human consumption, or animal consumption, please make absolutely sure that it is a food grade DE. It is an amazing product. My dog is 11 years old, and over the past year has started acting like a puppy again. Personally, I have lost 22 pounds in about 12 months (by choice...I need to lose about 30 more)...no change in diet, just a teaspoon of DE every day in a glass of water, or one half teaspoon twice a day. If you do not need to lose weight, it will not MAKE you lose weight. Mostly, it just regulates our bodies. My intestinal system has never worked so well...EVER! I am not advocating the use of DE as a human product...I am just telling you how it has helped me. If it is safe for dogs as they say, well, why not humans also? We are both mammals. Horses also do well by adding DE at the rate of about 2%-3% to their daily intake of food.

Signed,
Parasite free and healthy in New Mexico!

5.0 out of 5 stars A necessity if you have a BB infestation., July 12, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 10 Lb (Kitchen)
A toxic spray I used only slowed them down enough that they were crawling out of the vacuum cleaner 2 minutes later. A gentler 'human friendly' spray was unable to even slow them down after spraying a captured bug that was still alive and walking fine after 12 hours in a cup soaked with the spray. The DE powder killed the creature in less than an hour. After 2 weeks of treating the room, these creatures have become so scarce I haven't seen one for over a week.

It's a good idea to wear a mask and goggles because this powder may cause some irritation if inhaled or get in your eyes.

We did wind up tossing the mattress and box spring because the original infestation had destroyed them both. If you can find a spray that works, great! But don't pass up this product as it is very effective in treating in and around areas where they might hide for as long as it remains dry.

5.0 out of 5 stars Love going all Natural!, March 18, 2011

This review is from: Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 10 Lb (Kitchen)
I have 3 dogs in the house, and embarrassingly, I have been struggling with fleas for a few years. I've tried store bought products, prescription products, including Frontline and Capstar, and every flea shampoo imaginable and nothing seems to work. Adams flea spray seemed to work best of all the products I used, but even it gets rid of the fleas for a only couple days, but then they are back. Sometimes, I even wake up with flea bites on me! We decided our house must be infested, so we set off the flea bombs and that bought us about 3 days flea free.

Also, we are trying to make a move to natural products, so the more chemicals I used to kill fleas, the worse I felt about it all. I was using the Adams on our chihuahua about every 5 days, when the recommended application is every 9 days and I was afraid I was poisoning my dog! So then I read about diatomaceous earth.

I spent months researching and finally decided to take the plunge when we got a golden retriever and he was losing hair on his backside due to scratching and biting at fleas. I wanted to be able to take our golden camping and to ballgames etc but I knew I couldn't if he was all eat up in fleas. I was so embarrassed to admit I had let the problem get that bad and was ready to try ANYTHING.

When I got this package, I immediately sprinkled the 3 inside dogs. I have been using the chihuahua as the "control" because he has short white hair and fleas are easy to see on him. I HAVEN'T SEEN ONE FLEA SINCE I APPLIED DIATOMACEOUS EARTH!!! I'm sooo relieved! Finally, I can get my house back under control! I sprinkled our carpets, furniture, the perimeter of our house and haven't seen a flea since!

Chemicals are harmful and expensive! I could ill afford to buy a Frontline or Advantix for each dog every month, but for less than ONE monthly serving of those poisons, I have enough DE to last a good long while. And it fits in to my general plan for going all natural. I am so happy with this product!

I mixed this with water in a pump pesticide sprayer and sprayed it around the foundation of my house, the soffits, and the area over the basement walls. In about 3 days I noticed a large reduction in the number of living spiders, earwigs, centipedes, etc. Since then I have even added it to my aquarium to remove an Ick infection. Strongly suggest, and a little goes a long way.
