5.0 out of 5 stars It works and no harmful chemicals for your pets!, April 5, 2010

I have been a big fan of DE for many years. You have to make sure you get DE in food grade and not the kind used for swimming pools. I used this for dogs I have pulled from shelters on mange and it killed the mange mites. Again, no expensive vets bills or poisons for your pets.

Use it too around the perimeter of your home to kill spiders and other pests.

We have several dogs from rescue and they are on pasture grass...loaded with ticks and fleas. I place this in their kennels and on them directly. We have no problems with insects and my dogs suffering from bites.

Pricing: This is a great price for the 50lb size. You think you will not use this much, but trust me you will. As long as you store in indoors where it is free from mositure, it will last for a long time.

** Caution: You will need to wear a mask and buy a sifter to apply this cause you must not breathe in the dust. If you buy the DE, you need to buy an applicator to protect you and your pets fro mthe dust.

Other that that you are looking at a organic way to stay pest free!

Food grade DE is also used for a dewormer. I put it my pets food monthly so they are not taking toxic chemical dewormers. Not to mention the savings from not having to but those toxic dewormers saves me quite a bit in money.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm a fan!, March 24, 2010

This review is from: Diatomaceous Earth Food Grade 50 Lb (Kitchen)
For years we had issues with fleas on our dogs. We live in the country, and while our dogs live inside, they have free reign for a few acres around our home. Every year it's a struggle - cleaning their beds often, combing them, looking them over, bathing them. We used FrontlinePlus for several years, but became concerned with using synthetic chemicals on our dogs - and it didn't even work that well.

After a lot of research, I decided to try Diatomaceous Earth. I couldn't find it anywhere locally, and ended up deciding Amazon provided the best deal - and since I use the site for other shopping and had an account, it was convenient. That was in the late summer of 2006. By the time we got it, it was already pretty much winding down for flea season around here. But, we did put out some and it seemed to help get rid of the final ones.

2007-2009 - I put it out in the early spring, reapplying a couple of times throughout the summer. I use a cheap fine metal sifter to spread it. We have a fenced in large area in the backyard that the dogs stay (they are only allowed out front when we're home and out with them) in a lot during the day - I put the DE all over back there, plus a fair amount all around the house. I spend perhaps 2-3 hours applying it.

All three summers, for the first time ever, fleas have not been a problem for us. Each summer we have seen a random adult flee here and there (1-3 total), and that was with no other flea preventive/treatment.

We order the 50lb bag, and it goes a long way for use in preventing fleas. We've used it three summers (plus I've started using it this year) and we still have enough to probably last through this summer. So, you can spend $50-60 and get rid of fleas for four years with four dogs on a large area of land (and with minimal effort) - seems like a great deal to me! Also worth mentioning, people who live in the same area as us had issues with fleas all three of those summers (2 years ago was supposedly the worst in a long time for fleas around here), so it's not as if everyone was getting a break from fleas.

If you are wary and don't want to order 50lbs, try a smaller amount. It's definitely worth giving a try!

if you are looking for insect control, this is the stuff, kills anything that is next to the ground, like fire ants, slugs, etc

when i see fire ants, i get a scoop of D earth and then stir up the ants as i sprinkle the D earth. they scootch across it and then they die. if you live in the south you know how big a problem fire ants are. most ant killers say not to disturb the mound. but since this is most affective when the ants come in contact, i stir em up... does and awesome job. doesn't take a whole lot either, just a medium sprinkling.
