For 4 seasons I had been using a traditional Sand Filter to clean my swimming pool. For the first 2 years, it worked "OK". Then the water started to lose its sparkle (in spite of regular back-washing). By the fifth season I knew I had a problem (that old sand filter wasn't working at all). My choice was to either waste time taking it apart OR to get a brand new filter mechanism. I chose to switch to a diatomaceous earth filter mechanism. After installation of the new equipment and adding just 4 pounds of the D.E. filtering powder, my pool went from a cloudy mess to CRYSTAL CLEAR in just a couple of days. And my pool remained sparkling clean all the way to its winter closing. "D.E." filtering really does work like magic! I MADE THE RIGHT CHOICE! So should you :)!

I use the TroubleFreePool.com technique of adding some DE to my skimmer after each backwash.
The technique is:

Add Diatomaceous Earth slowly (over at least an hour) to your skimmer until the normal operating pressure increases by 1 PSI.
Most filters require 1-2 cups. My unusually large Hayward S310T2 takes more like 4-5 cups.
The DE itself is large enough for a sand filter to catch, but the microscopic particles DE filters are not. The DE will form a thin, even grid over your sand and will catch the fine dirt and debris that sand filters always miss.

This technique probably doesn't filter quite as well as a true DE filter, but it definitely helps.

Never use food-grade DE, which is altogether different than pool-grade DE.

I purchased one of those in-expensive above ground pools. It was an Intex brand metal frame pool (10' X 30"). It comes with Model 02 Filter-Pump and uses Intex Type A Filter Cartridge. The pool worked great for the first month. I experimented around with how much chlorine to add and how often to keep it at the ideal level. I eventually adjusted the PH to ideal level. I went and bought the replacement Intex brand type A filters when the original filter seemed to stay dirty. The water remained turbid and cloudy. I shocked it with chlorine, but still remained cloudy. This went on for 2-3 weeks. After searching on the internet for a solution I finally found a forum about adding Diatomaceous Earth (DE) to the filter. Doing this allows the filter to perform better and allow it to filter small particles. In about 1 day after adding the DE to the filter the pool water was sparkling clear. We have been using it for over 2 months now and our water is sparkling clear, and has never become green.

The product is what it is. Does what it is supposed to do. The only thing was the package it came in was smashed and leaking didn't loose much just made a mess when the outer box was opened. Very hard to clean up. I would purchasing locally for the extra two to three bucks. That way you can see what you are getting and transport your self without making a mess (bring a plastic trash bag) I only bought it online because I purchased a filter at the same time and thought it would come at the same time not a week apart.

The price was the best around. I have added the diatomaceous earth twice, after backwashing. It has done everthing it was intended to do and work as well as a higher priced competitor's brand.
