A Spanish-only dictionary for the rest of us,

My wife (from Monterrey, Mexico) and I (from Dallas, Texas) needed a Spanish-only dictionary. I have an excellent Spanish-English dictionary (the American Heritage), but that didn't work too well for her, and I had progressed far enough that I needed one that didn't refer back to English. I first bought her a piece of junk (the Diccionario Practico De La Lengua Espanola Del Nuevo Mundo); nothing we looked up was already there! It became quite clear to us that this was the most fundamental dictionary; anyone who spoke Spanish didn't need it.Fortunately, this dictionary saved us. While still not as extensive as we might like, it's comprehensive enough that nearly everything we look up is in there. I'm still looking for the truly comprehensive Spanish dictionary she wants, but this is quite serviceable.

Useful for advanced Spanish students,

It was suggested to me by a Hispanic Studies professor that I pick up an all-Spanish dictionary. I wanted one light and portable enough to take to class. This one fit the bill. It has thousands of words, and the definitions are not so complicated that I have to resort to using my Spanish-English dictionary. A worthy purchase for your dictionary collection.

The reason I bought this book is because I believe that the best way for me to learn Spanish is without constant reference to English. Show me the word, give me the Spanish definition. Don't translate. I wanted a Spanish ONLY diccionario. All other dictionaries are really "translationaries." This is the only one of its kind I found and I love it and use it frequently.

My granddaughter is taking advanced Spanish as an adult after living in Spain for a while. Her teacher insisted on this book and it is carried in her book bag as it is just the right size and very helpful

Un diccionario conveniente y útil,

Se puede usarlo rápidamente y fácilmente. Este diccionario tiene casi todas las palabras que se necesita en una clase de español avanzada. Tengo diez copias en mi clase.
This is an excellent smaller dictionary for use in advanced Spanish courses. Make sure you understand that it is Spanish ONLY. An exceptional dictionary to keep handy for longer papers, but one that you probably would not want to carry back and forth to class, is El Larousse Pequeño Ilustrado. For students and translators that need an excellent bilingual dictionary for translation, I have seen nothing that compares with the Oxford Spanish Dictionary. I bought a used copy, and I could not be more happy. If anything happened to IT, I would pay full price to replace it immediately.

Well, I guess my title says it all. I needed a magnifying glass to read it, so I cannot comment on the contents. Melita

perhaps the best Spanish only dictionary for students of the Spanish language,
This review is from: Diccionario Larousse del Español Moderno (Paperback)
If you are serious about reaching fluency in Spanish, at some point you need to invest in a Spanish only dictionary. This is perhaps the best choice that you can make in a Spanish only dictionary as as student of the Spanish language.
All over the world, Larousse is synonymous to dictionary. Diccionario Larousse del Español Moderno (Spanish Edition) is a compact dictionary that contains all the essential Spanish vocabulary you need to be able to survive, mingle, and enjoy the modern world. With over 50,000 entries and 100,00 definitions, you wouldn't believe all of these would fit in this light and portable volume. Whether it is classical or modern vocabulary, the author made sure that you will get the meaning of Spanish words you encounter in your everyday living. The list has all the Spanish words that you read from newspapers, books, and magazines; what you hear from radio programs and what you see from the television and plays. The author has really provided all the tools you need to make your conversation suited for the occasion. Diccionario Larousse del Español Moderno (Spanish Edition) made an effort to include the common expressions of Spanish-speaking people from Latin America. You can also find slang, colloquial terms, new and foreign words used in our present times, and even popular phrasesused in different Spanish regions! And since it is based on the best selling encyclopedic Pequeno Larousse Ilustrado, this book would surely knock out any other ordinary Spanish dictionaries out there. The author used contemporary language to define the Spanish words, making it very user-friendly to anyone looking to widen their vocabulary understanding. What is even more impressive is that each word that is defined is abundantly illustrated through examples so you can grasp the whole meaning. It even shows the relationship with other parts of speech so you can have a precise concept of the use of words. Succinct yet precise definitions, this is truly a great pick for anyone learning the Spanish language. For those who are as passionate as I am about learning Spanish I have listed My Top 10 Tools For Learning Spanish: 1. I bought a used one and I didn't ask how old it was. It was printed in 1984 so there are probably a lot of newer words that are not in my edition, but I still think I will get a lot of use out of it and enjoy it. The print is rather small so for those that need reading glasses or are about to you may want to check that out in person before buying.
