Mapuche (or Mapudungu) should not be absent in any serious
attempt to study and to compare Native American Languages in all their wealth and linguistic/cultural heritage. "Diccionario Mapuche" gives us a lot of Mapuche words which are not otherwise accessible and helps us in this way to get acquainted with (traditional) Mapuche lexicon, and the basic words can be looked up by means of Spanish. You are not taught how to speak the sound symbols employed, and there is no grammar, so you will not actually learn this language with this dictionary, but "Diccionario Mapuche" offers sufficient materials in Mapuche to combine profitably with some grammar still to be offered to the interested reader. "Diccionario Mapuche" offers interesting chapters on Mapuche mythology and beliefs, legends, and also a chapter on Mapuche chiefs which might be of value to Latin American historians. |
