5.0 out of 5 stars The Best Current Book on Dice Games, December 21, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Dice Games Properly Explained (Right Way S.) (Paperback)
Most of the books I've seen on dice games are short ... pamphlets, really. This is a comprehensive 225-page book that tells you how to play every dice game out there. Explanations are clear and easy to follow. Each entry includes information on strategies and odds and advice on how to win.

The author is extremely knowledgable. For example, he lists all the different names for each game. This is important because so many dice games go under different names in different localities. The index is complete so you can easily look up any game under whatever name it may be known to you.

The game strategy advice is well thought out. It's authoritative and based on statistics but still easy to follow.

This is the first really thorough book on dice games in many years (good older titles are by Scarne and Frey). I recommend it highly to anyone who wants to have some fun and learn a bit too.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dr. Knizia does it again, December 12, 2000
By
Kevin Nunn (Houston, Texas, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Dice Games Properly Explained (Right Way S.) (Paperback)
Reiner Knizia is the most prolific game designer of our day and this is doubly distressing when you consider that each one of them has its own flavor. With this book, he turned his attention away from the board games and card games for which he's famous and instead focused on dice games. How successful was he in making the switch? He was very successful, that's how.

Throughout the book, he presents each game clearly and concisely, follows that presentation with strategy tips and (frequently) his own personal variations.

So if you have any love for math puzzles, probability, or dice games, order a copy of this book today!

5.0 out of 5 stars What's not to love?, September 16, 2010

Reiner Knizia does it again! If you enjoy table top games then you own it to yourself to pick-up and read this book cover to cover.

Reiner Knizia is one of the premier card and board game designer in the western world today, and he delivers everything that one would expect and more in "Dice Games Properly Explained."

The books chapters are: lucky scoring games, lucky counter games, the theory of dice, betting games, progression games, jeopardy games, category games, and bluffing games.

In each of the games chapters, Reiner describes the basic genre and then gives workable examples of old favorites, lesser known, and new games.

The games are described with just the right balance of brevity and completeness to allow you to play all the games without having the book be a 3,200 page tome.

I highly recommend this book on any serious gamers bookshelf.

In service,

Rich

The book is well written and sorted logically in categories. Be sure to have scratch papers, at least six die and about 200 counters when getting this book. You will be able to dive in and play any games without delay. For some games, the author mentions using chalk; I utilize a dry erase board instead.

Knizia has a well earned reputation of gaming quality. this book lives up to the expectations created by his name. So, of course I purchased another one of his books even before I finished this one...

Dr Reiner Knizia does not disappoint!

This book is truly an amazing collection of dice games.

As I read each game, I wanted to play each one. I have children so therefore, the randomness of the dice has a great equalizing effect with adults.

But it covers the gamut of games from pure randomness (Lucky Scoring, Lucky Counter Games) to some slight strategic plays ( Betting Games, Progression Games, Jeopardy Games, Category (Yahtzee)) to a fair amount of skill (Bluffing Games).

He covers thoughts on dice and randomness as well as simple but engaging variants on the games.

Really inspirational for playing around with the mechanics of all games.

The only super-tiny-slight disappointment is there wasn't a category for a dice game like ButtonMen which merges planning as well as incorporating the range and probability of dice larger and smaller than the traditional d6.

This book is amazing and well worth purchasing. With just a handful of dice and this book, we've played for hours upon hours. Most interestingly, many of these games have been separately packaged and sold...and with fancier packaging they have retailed for more than the price of this book! [...]

When I purchased these dice I did not know what the quality would be. I am pleased to see they seem to be of good quality and do what dice need to so...Winner!
