Book Description

999750156X 978-9997501561 June 1967

A gifted artist and writer, Natalie Babbitt’s novels are inspired by a brilliance and imagination that is completely original. She began her career in 1966 with the publication of a picture book, The Forty-Ninth Magician, a collaboration with her husband, Samuel Fisher Babbitt. Her first novel, The Search for Delicious, established her gift for writing magical tales with a more profound meaning embedded within them.  Kneeknock Rise earned her a Newbery Honor Medal, but it is Tuck Everlasting which has insured Babbitt’s place in the history of children’s literature.

Babbitt has written six more novels including The Eyes of the Amaryllis and Goody Hall—each one presenting her unique vision of an enchanted world. Her latest novel, Jack Plank Tells Tales, was published in Spring 2007.

Natalie Babbitt lives in Providence, Rhode Island, and is a grandmother of three. When asked what she wants readers to remember about her books, she replied, “the questions without answers.”

5.0 out of 5 stars The best form of poetry, July 14, 2011
This review is from: Dick Foote and the Shark (Paperback)
This is my favorite childhood book. Yes, it is a poem. Mistakenly assuming it is a novel before you read it is certainly not a reason to give it a low rating - seems more like your problem than the story's.

It is actually so well done, and I am still so enthralled with its graceful, charming and image-evocative phrasing that I have it committed to memory. For the child I was it was the perfect way to tell this story of a father and son's strained relationship. I am no poet, and I hate poems that aspire to rhyme and rhythm at the expense of saying what the author wants to say. This is so far from that. To me, this is the rare example of when the verse and the cadence align perfectly with the story that needs to be told. I have nothing but praise for someone who could create this story in this format.

I thought this was a novel but it's actually a short poem. It's probably of interest to Natalie Babbit fans only.
